Democratic Congressman Scott Peters has easily won a fifth term in the 52nd District on Tuesday in early returns, fending off a challenge from Republican businessman Jim DeBello.
Peters’ victory was not seriously in question.
The district stretches across much of coastal San Diego County, including Coronado and includes Poway as well.
The area used to be a battleground district but is now viewed by political analysts as a firm blue seat.
Peters credits his work on supporting homeless veterans programs and backing projects like a new Navy SEAL training facility and the expansion of the San Ysidro border crossing for the district’s political metamorphosis.
He also said President Donald Trump’s policies and his handling of the Covid-19 pandemic are responsible for alienating his constituents from the Republican Party.
DeBello had never held public office before. He branded Peters as a “career politician, who hadn’t authored a single piece of legislation.
He said he entered the race because “things weren’t getting done” in the 52nd District.
“I look at local homelessnes as being intractable, things that we can solve that aren’t being done,” he said.
