The Justice Department is looking into whether former CIA officer John Kiriakou disclosed classified information when he talked to the media, including NPR, about the interrogation of suspected al-Qaida member Abu Zubaydah.
Kiriakou described how the technique known as waterboarding was used on Zubaydah. He said that at the time, he thought the procedure was necessary to prevent another terrorist attack. He later went public about the interrogation because he came to believe waterboarding constituted torture.
Jonathan Landay, senior national security correspondent for McClatchy newspapers, reports that the department opened the investigation after receiving a "criminal referral" from the CIA.
