Not In Our Town Screening
Not In Our Town: Light in the Darkness, will be screened Monday February 6, 2012 at the UC San Diego Student Services Center Multipurpose Room, at 5:45 pm.
The screening will be followed by a Q&A session with special guest Patchogue's Mayor Paul Pontieri who confronted the situation in his town.
The death of an Ecuadorian immigrant in Patchogue, New York, came as a shock to many in the quite Long Island village. It was 2008 and Latino residents were being targeted in a series of attacks that culminated with the murder of Marcelo Lucero, who had lived in the Long Island village for 13 years. A group of seven teens were charged in the hate crime and murder, launching the community into the national debate on immigration.
The mayor of Patchogue will join us to talk about the changes made within his community and we'll hear from San Diego's Anti-Defamation League, to find out what's being done in local schools to encourage acceptance and respect of others.
The story of how Patchogue residents responded to hate is highlighted in the documentary "Not In Our Town: Light in the Darkness". It's produced by The Working Group, and is the third installment in the national PBS series "Not In Our Town".
