San Diego's Top Weekend Events: From KAABOO To 'El Grito'
This is KPBS midday edition. I'm Maureen Cavanagh. Some very big names are coming to town this weekend to do what they do at Kabu. That's of course the three day music festival at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. We'll talk about that. And comedian Trevor Noah and Mexican Independence Day. All on our weekend preview and joining me is Nina Guerin. Hey PBS arts calendar editor. Nina welcome. Hello. Kabu is a relatively new festival isn't it. It is. It's it's four years old and it's growing because this is the first time in its history that it's actually sold out. Why do people like it so much. This is a music festival for people who hate music festivals. And what I mean by that is like you don't have to be in the mind and like tracking them. There's a lot of space with Saby area as they have clean bathrooms which is important. And then the acts are a mix of popular music kind of throwbacks and then still some up and coming artists so I think everyone will know people performing and I heard a rumor that there's a swimming pool somewhere. Yes well I hear that too. I don't have the money to afford to see it for myself. There's like a Vegas style pool club and it has deejays and they play games. There's a lot of VIP experiences that could be another reason why people like it you can get meals by celebrity chefs and massages you can have your hair blown out. It's yeah there's a lot to do you know at the heart of it though. Kubu is a music festival so who are some of the performers. Like I said there's something for everyone so there's Katy Perry. Imagine Dragons Foo Fighter Wiz Khalifa Earth Wind and Fire. Lots and lots of bands like that. Well let's listen to one of the artists. This is Katy Perry's change to the rhythm. Now you mentioned Nina. One thing you particularly like about Kabu is the comedy. Yes I consider myself kind of a comedy nerd. And since day one of this festival they've brought out some really good comedians this year Judd Apatow is coming Craig Ferguson. Craig Robinson Kevin Nealon Nikki Glazer it's always just a really good lineup of funny people. So it all sounds great. But if it is sold out. Why are we talking about it. Well you should know because there's going to be traffic but also you can livestream some of the acts this year. They're going to be lifestream on Kellow which is Hugh E L L O. And you have to RSVP for a concert code on their site. OK. Com and you can watch some of the acts and I understand that this festival continues to expand. Yes there's going to be a Kabu came in in Grand Cayman in February and Kabu Texas happening in Dallas in May. And it does have plans to expand into more cities in the United States plus in Canada and Mexico. Kabu Del Mar happens today through Sunday at the Del Mar racetrack. Another big name comedian is coming to San Diego though not to Kabu who has it. It's Trevor Noah. He's the current host of The Daily Show and remind us what his comedy is like. Well obviously it's political. But he also has bits about his childhood growing up in South Africa. He grew up under apartheid and then also his experiences getting use to American culture. Let's hear a bit of Trevor Noah's comedy. Here he is talking about British colonization which which me though is like how people act like colonization never happened. I don't like that. Like it's weird when people say well these bloody foreigners coming into the UK all these bloody foreign as well because you told them about the UK. Send. In the world's. No one knew about Great Britain in India. They were having a good time. The British went and told the Indians. They were having fun with elephants and spices they had. Come to this country. The British got there and they were like a. Great Britain. Now he's written a few books hasn't he. Yes he wrote a book called Born crime which is about his parents romances. Mother is black and his father is white and that was considered a crime in South Africa. And he also has a book called The Donald J Trump president Twitter library that analyzes TRUMP TWEETS. Trevor Noah performs Saturday at V.A. has Sarena at SJS U. And finally you want to remind us that this weekend is Mexican Independence Day. Yes it's on Sunday. Technically it starts at midnight on Saturday night and it honors Father Miguel Beigel and he was the one who urged Mexicans to rise up against the Spanish government. How is it celebrated. It starts with something called and good be. And it's something that the president does on his like veranda on and also happens in cities around Mexico. It's a call and response and you're kind of calling out to the historical figures and events in Mexico. Now you brought a clip of people celebrating El Grito on the two hundredth anniversary back in 2010. Here's a sample. They're not they're not. Now what about in San Diego. Are there events going on here. Yes there are in Old Town there's thus Bathory. That's on Saturday from noon to 4:00 and then at 4:00 o'clock at Chicano Park there's going to be our own a good show happening. And because you represent K.P. vs arts you also have arts related events. Of course I always have to have arts events. Also on Saturday there's the free concert at the Old Globe of all female mariachi band called less coffee. And then in Carlsbad New Village Arts has a day that's filled with music and theater Finemore fiestas pottery a celebration on the PBS arts calendar at Cape PBS dot org slash arts and I've been speaking with PBS arts calendar editor Nina Guerin. Nina thanks. Thank you.
