Army Spc. Edward J. Acosta receives the Purple Heart

Army Spc. Edward J. Acosta, 21, died March 5 in La Jolla, where he was being treated for injuries sustained when his vehicle hit an improvised explosive device in Afghanistan on December 3rd, 2011, according to the Department of Defense.

Acosta wrote on his Facebook page he was from Hesperia, California and attended Hesperia High School.

Acosta was a line medic who joined the Army in 2008. He assigned to 2nd Battalion, 5th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division, at Fort Bliss, Texas.
