California leads the nation in the number of casualties it has suffered in the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. This, according to a new study by the Center for Investigative Reporting.
Researchers, using data from the Department of Defense, found at latest count that at least 671 service members from California have died in the post 9/11 wars.
According to CIR:
The same gruesome reality holds for those wounded in action. An additional 4,358 service members from California have been injured as of April 16, outpacing the rest of the states and U.S. territories, including Texas, Florida and New York.
Texas had the second-highest number of Iraq and Afghan war casualties. Florida was third.
Another interesting but not surprising fact reported by the Center for Investigative Reporting: improvised explosive devices, or IEDs, caused the the majority of deaths and injuries in the Iraq and Afghanistan Wars.
