Army Staff Sgt. Robert E. Thomas Jr. of Fontana, California, died September 13 at Brooke Army Medical Center in Texas. The 24-year-old Thomas suffered the injuries that ultimately caused his death during a "non-combat related incident" on April 21, 2013, in Maiwand, Afghanistan.

Camp Pendleton Marine Cpl. Nicholas James Sell, 21, died Monday morning during a training exercise at the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center in Twentynine Palms. Sell was killed when the tank in which he was riding caught fire.
