Official: New Rules Could Ease Travel Worries

Because of a backlog in processing new passports, Americans who have not yet received the documents are being asked to print out and present information from the U.S. Passport Office before they enter the United States.

Assistant Secretary of State for Consular Affairs Maura Harty tells NPR's Rebecca Roberts about new rules for Americans flying home from Mexico and Canada.

An excerpt of the rules, from the State Department's Web site:

The U.S. Departments of State and Homeland Security announced June 8, 2007 that U.S. citizens traveling to Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Bermuda who have applied for but not yet received passports can nevertheless temporarily enter and depart from the United States by air with a government issued photo identification and Department of State official proof of application for a passport through September 30, 2007.
