The debate over whether San Diego should build a new city hall has been put on the back burner for now. The City Council decided at a special meeting Tuesday not to act on the issue.
The council could have voted to override the mayor’s veto of the city hall ballot measure. But, the council didn’t take any action so the veto stands.
The mayor vetoed the project after the developer and project supporters said they wouldn’t have time to mount a campaign in favor of it.
Councilman Carl DeMaio says the measure was pulled from the ballot because the sales tax increase was put on the ballot.
“You’re not taking this off because you don’t have enough money for your political campaigns,” he said. “You’re taking this off because you’re afraid that the public has already come to a judgment and will vote it down.”
But other council members say a new city hall will continue to be discussed. Supporters say a new building will save the city money in the long run because it would be cheaper to maintain than the current structure.
