Community leaders across San Diego County are coming together on Tuesday to discuss how to break the cycle of gang violence in local neighborhoods. They’re also hoping to bust some stereotypes along the way.
The San Diego Gang Prevention and Intervention Summit brings together school officials, police and community leaders from North County to the South Bay.
They'll be sharing strategies on what's working when it comes to squelching gang activity and violence in communities both big and small.
A recent report finds gang-related homicides have gone down in the City of San Diego. However, law enforcement officials say assaults and other forms of gang violence still thrive in neighborhoods across San Diego County.
Rosa Ana Lozada is on San Diego's gang commission. She says gang activity is not confined to the inner city.
“Its important for people not to assume that it's one particular ethnic group because that is an easy automatic visual for I think all of us,” Lozada said. “The real education is the behavior and the activity that exist in all areas.”
Police say gang activity is being documented in more affluent neighborhoods like Solana Beach, Poway and Encinitas.
