Rent Control At Stake In Oceanside

Rent Control At Stake In Oceanside
Oceanside city council meeting is likely to be packed with people tonight, as the city council makes a decision on rent control. Thousands of residents have signed a petition to save some of the region’s most affordable housing.

Oceanside council must decide tonight whether to back track on an ordinance they approved three months ago to end rent control. Their other option is to put the issue on the ballot.

Signature gatherers have collected more than 15,000 signatures to overturn the ordinance. The Registrar of Voters has confirmed there are enough valid signatures to put the measure on the ballot if the council doesn’t change its mind.

The vote in May to end rent control pitted three business friendly council members against two who favor preserving affordable housing in the city.

Thousands of seniors and veterans live in Oceanside’s mobile home parks, where rent control has been in place for 30 years.

The city clerk estimates it’ll cost the city more than half million dollars for a special election, and about $50,000 dollars if it is on the June or November ballot next year.
