Hosted by Scripps Cancer Center this free support group will take place March 4 from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m.. It will provide people who are living with advanced-stage cancer an opportunity to share experiences, information and concerns with others who live with similar challenges. In this group, participants can express thoughts and feelings that come up when living with advanced cancer — and gain insight, peer support and understanding. Led by an experienced medical social worker, the group focuses on the challenges of living with advanced cancer, including purpose, fear, family and transitions. Group Description Note: Though this class is offered as part of the Certificate in Memoir Writing, there is no pre-requisite to join this class. All students, members, and nonmembers are encouraged to enroll. Agents often share that what makes a memoir stand out in the marketplace is a strong author’s voice. In this workshop we will uncover the soul of the writing with fun and interactive voice techniques to make the storytelling as dynamic as possible. Students will also learn how to craft smooth transitions as well as how to enter and exit a chapter or scene. Participants will gain a better understanding how to create a seamless text that takes the reader between past memories (flashbacks) and present-day experiences and observations. We will work on bringing the theme of the piece to life so that the manuscript will resonate with universal meaning. Symbolism will also be explored as a way to deepen the writing and flesh out the theme of your book. Class structure: Except for the first class, the first hour will be lecture and the second hour will be read and critique where participants can workshop their material or class assignments. Tone of class: We strive to create a supportive, nurturing environment where participants feel encouraged to share, risk and connect to their most creative self. Class Description Will 2026 be the year you finally write that novel you’ve been dreaming about? This eight-week online novel writing course will walk you through the process step by step. Each week, the focus will be on some technical aspect of novel writing — from premise to point of view, plot & structure to methods of characterization. In addition to the weekly lesson, there will be curated readings and assignments which you may post for instructor feedback. Additionally, in the last two weeks, you will be allowed to post up to 2000 words of your work-in-progress for critique. This is a flexible course, which you can “do” at your own pace, though ideally you will follow along week by week. There are no live sessions and no Zoom, so if you have to miss a week or two, the lesson will still be there waiting for you when you come back! NOTE: While participants are encouraged to interact (offering feedback to each other’s work and engaging in online discussions about the material), engagement and interaction amongst participants varies from session to session and is not mandatory.
