Celebrate the Season with Handbuilt Ghosts! Friday, October 3, from 5-7 p.m. Ages 12+ welcome! Join us for the next edition of Clay Happy Hour! In this Clay Happy Hour session, we’ll create your own ceramic ghosts — little spirits that can double as tea light holders or an incense cover. In this clay happy hour, you’ll learn to handbuild and personalize your ghosts with cutouts and details. Students may create either one medium size or two small ghosts per sign-up, time permitting. Whether you’re a beginner or just looking for a new way to unwind, this open studio setting is a great chance to get your hands messy, meet new people, and let your creativity ring out. All materials are provided, and you’ll get to take home your handmade creations after they’re fired and ready for pick-up in 3-4 weeks. Grab a friend, enjoy some clay therapy, and discover the joy of crafting with clay! Just be sure to arrive before Clay Happy Hour ends at 7 p.m. so you have enough time to complete your project! Over the course of eight sessions, students will begin their journey into Yiddishland, exploring both the language and get a taste of its rich culture. The course begins with learning to read and write the alef-beys (alphabet). From there, students will soon be ready to read selections from Yiddish literature, sing traditional Yiddish folksongs, and practice everyday expressions. Students will learn how to introduce themselves, share their stories, and describe their personal connections to Yiddish. All learning materials will be provided by the teacher. He has studied Yiddish at University College London, and courses in Tel Aviv, Berlin and Paris. He has led Yiddish poetry courses online for Babel’s Blessing Language School and in-person workshops at the Shtetl Berlin Festival, the Maison de la Culture Yiddish and the Yiddish Sof-Vokh UK, which he also helps to organise. He teaches at the summer programme ‘Ot Azoy’ and recently completed a pedagogy fellowship at the Yiddish Book Center (Amherst, MA). The International California Surf Museum, celebrating 40 years in 2026 and the first and oldest surf museum in the country, invites you to attend the 17th Annual Gala. Since 1986, CSM has been collecting and preserving the surfing history and artifacts of this popular lifestyle sport and culture as well as producing fascinating exhibits and dynamic educational programs. The funds generated from the Gala help the museum continue these efforts. The 17th Annual Gala will be held on Saturday, November 1, 2025 from 2 p.m. - 8 p.m. at the NEW LOCATION, Oceanside’s beachfront 5-star resort, the Seabird Ocean Resort & Spa, 101 Mission Ave, Oceanside, California. Overlooking there Oceanside Pier and the Pacific Ocean. The event begins with a 2 p.m. cocktail hour on the outdoor patio adjacent to our silent auction room with dinner service in the main ballroom following at 4 p.m. Once meal service is completed, the excitement begins with a live auction of surfboards made specifically for this event. Our evening is then completed with the presentation of the Silver Surfer award for this year’s honorees. "Remanence" Juan Cabrera & Melissa Walter Oct. 22 – Dec. 5 Gallery closed Nov. 10, Veterans Day, and Nov. 27 – 28, Thanksgiving Reception: Thursday, Oct. 30 | 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. Artist Talk: Thursday, Oct. 30 at 11:30 a.m. Second Reception: Saturday, Nov. 15 | 5-7 p.m. The interplay of memory versus reality in relation to the psychological and physical human experience is centered in this abstract exhibit of works by San Diego artists Juan Cabrera and Melissa Walter. Informed by her background in astrophysics, Melissa Walter’s mixed-media practice is deeply rooted in observation, research, and the translation of scientific concepts into abstract, minimalist works that investigate humanity’s place within the cosmos. Her process relies on conceptually informed mediums and techniques ranging from repetitive action and fine detail to digital renderings and sculptural abstractions. This focus on process is reflected in the work of Juan Cabrera, whose process involves manipulating found photographic source material to create works on paper depicting architectural dream spaces. Through his practice in watercolor and woodblock printmaking, he investigates emotional attachment to architectural interior space, layering disparate textures and images to reveal hidden tensions. Together, the work of these artists explores the nuances of memory as subjective experience, interrogating the possibility of objectivity and the limits of representation. Yiddish Classes for Absolute Beginners 2 Basic Grammar and Conversation NEW! 8-Session Yiddish Course This course is perfect for those who have completed the course Yiddish for Absolute Beginners, as well as others who can already read the Yiddish Alef-Beys and have had around 10 hours of prior instruction (about A1.1 level). Among other things, students will learn to write in Yiddish, practice introducing themselves and using everyday greetings, and become familiar with common verbs. While the main emphasis is on consolidating elementary grammar, the course also employs a multimedia approach to introduce students to Yiddish culture, literature, and music through short texts, audiovisual materials, and guided exercises.
