San Diego Soul Food Fest Come experience some of the best soul food San Diego has to offer at the San Diego Soul Food Fest! This event will be hosted on Saturday, August 1 in the North Park community from 11a.m. - 4 pm & will feature DELICIOUS soul food from across the diaspora. Most people just think of one thing when they think of soul food, we want to provide the opportunity to expose folks to different types of cuisines while supporting local businesses, large and small. We are taking advantage of the opportunity to bring the local community together, but also provide exposure to different black owned eateries. Meet aja monet aja monet Bacquie is a Brooklyn-born, Cuban-Jamaican poet, musician, and activist. Her work explores themes of love, gender, justice, and spirituality. At 19, she became the youngest Grand Slam Champion in the history of the Nuyorican Poets Café. Monet's debut poetry collection, "My Mother Was a Freedom Fighter," was nominated for an NAACP Image Award in 2018. Meet Def Sound Def Sound (born Emmanuel "Def Sound" Ricketts) is an Afro-Caribbean, post-binary transdisciplinary artist, poet, and producer based in South Central, Los Angeles. We celebrate Black Music Month with San Diego's own Soul Disciples, a hip-hop and rap collective.

Starring: Cheech Marin, Dolores Huerta, Edward James Olmos, Lou Diamond Phillips, Luis Valdez People may best remember director and screenwriter Luis Valdez as the maker of the 1987 biographical drama "La Bamba," starring Lou Diamond Phillips as Chicano rock and roll star Ritchie Valens. But Valdez is also regarded as a founder of Chicano theater and a pioneer of the Chicano movement of the ’60s and ’70s. Growing up as one of ten children to Mexican migrant farmworkers, he was originally set to become an engineer like his older brother. But by his sophomore year of college, Valdez had switched his major to English and was writing scathing satirical plays about the experiences of Mexican Americans and the racism and prejudice they face. This earned him the title “pachuco,” which refers to the zoot-suit-wearing, caló-speaking youth of a 1930s Mexican American counterculture that rejected assimilation into Anglo American society. Narrated by Edward James Olmos, "American Pachuco: The Legend of Luis Valdez" uses archival footage and interviews with such Chicano icons as Dolores Huerta, Rose Portillo, and Cheech Marin to highlight Valdez’s lasting impact on American history.

Start your engines for an afternoon of fun, friends, and fundraising as Home of Guiding Hands (HGH) hosts its annual Cheers for Charity Pub Crawl inviting the community to raise a glass while making a meaningful difference for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities throughout San Diego County. This year's Race Day-themed event will take participants on a spirited tour through three of La Mesa's favorite establishments: Coin Haus, The Regal Bar, and Casa Gabriela. Guests are encouraged to embrace the racing theme with checkered flags, pit crew uniforms, racing jerseys, and winner's circle-inspired attire. All proceeds from the event directly support Home of Guiding Hands' life-changing programs and services, including residential housing, early childhood development, independent living skills training, life planning, respite care, and other essential supports that empower individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities to live full, meaningful lives. For more than 50 years, Home of Guiding Hands has provided quality community-based services to children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities throughout San Diego County. Events like Cheers for Charity help ensure individuals receive the support, resources, and opportunities they need to thrive.
