The Philippine Cultural Arts Festival returns to Balboa Park on August 14, 2022, after two years of absence due to the COVID-19 pandemic lock-down on public events. The SAMAHAN Filipino American Performance Arts & Education Center will hold its 35th Philippine Cultural Arts Festival on Sunday, August 14, 2022 from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. in Balboa Park, at the corner of Park Boulevard and Presidents Way. Admission is FREE! A family-oriented event focused on cultural heritage, entertainment and networking, this festival appeals to the whole family and allows San Diego locals as well as tourists the opportunity to learn about Philippine culture and performing arts through dances and music.

Italian singer, musician and songwriter Zucchero will perform live at Balboa Theatre on Saturday, October 1 at 8:00 p.m. Internationally acclaimed Italian blues artist Zucchero Fornaciari will perform one show in Chicago on his world tour. He will also perform music by Sting, Pavarotti, Bocelli, Eric Clapton and too many more to mention. His music is mostly inspired by gospel, soul, blues and rock music, Italian ballads and rhythmic R&B-boogie-like pieces. He is known as the “father of Italian blues” and is one of the few European blues artists who still enjoys great international success. Zucchero’s world tour coincides with the release of his newest album, D.O.C. Deluxe Edition. Death metal pioneers Cannibal Corpse will perform live at The Observatory on Wednesday, November 23 at 6:00 p.m. While they continue to do what they do with aplomb, the one substantial change to Cannibal Corpse in 2020 is the addition of guitarist Erik Rutan to their ranks, joining Webster, founding drummer Paul Mazurkiewicz, guitarist Rob Barrett and vocalist George "Corpsegrinder" Fisher. Known for his roles in Morbid Angel, Ripping Corpse and most notably fronting the mighty Hate Eternal, Rutan has long established himself as one of the most dynamic forces in contemporary death metal. Simultaneously, he has built up a reputation as one of the most in demand producers in metal, having previously produced four Cannibal Corpse albums, alongside the likes of Goatwhore, Soilent Green and Belphegor. Filling in live on guitar since 2019, in 2020 he became a full member, contributing to the writing process. Special guests Dark Funeral, Immolation, and Black Anvil will also be performing alongside Cannibal Corpse for their 2022 North American Tour.

In this character series brought by San Diego Writers, Ink., students will work with the instructor to learn key concepts in characterization, such as motive, desires and how life differs and overlaps with fiction and learn to both analyze character interior in literary works as well as apply these learning to their own writing projects. Each session will be accompanied by a few optional reading and writing practices that help student solidify concepts and techniques discussed. Character Vulnerability—Secrets and Taboos • Brief review and recap material from prior session(s). • Discuss secrets, taboos and other ways that make characters vulnerable. • Study and analyze routines and other ways characters may use to maintain control. Character Transformation–Breaking Points • Brief review and recap material from prior session(s). • Study and analyze ways characters might let go of their secrets or in other ways relinquish control. • Discuss, write and understand ways they might resist and/or embrace this change.
