The Division of Arts and Humanities at UC San Diego is proud to present the "Improvisation in Rast-Panjgah" concert by Amir Hossein Pourjavadi on setar and Pejman Hadadi on tombak on May 26, 2022 at 7 p.m. at the Qualcomm Institute (Atkinson Hall/UC San Diego). This concert is presented in collaboration with the Persian Cultural Center of San Diego, and has been made possible by the Chehreazad Endowed Funds for the Arts at UC San Diego. The event is open and free for the public, UC San Diego faculty, students and staff, and members of the Persian Cultural Center. Thursday June 9 comedy is back at Amplified Ales East Village with Ryan O'Flanagan from Comedy Central headlining. Featured performers are Logan Guntzelman, Tatiana Cwiklinski, and Steven Ghabbour. Show starts at 8 p.m. Limited Seating. This night is sponsored by Old Harbor Distilling. Riff City Comedy hosts a comedy show bringing the best comedians from San Diego, Los Angeles, New York and around the country. In a dystopian future, a water shortage has led to a government-led ban on private toilets. Everyone is forced to use public restrooms, which are regulated by a single, evil company (Urine Good Company) that charges outrageous fees for people to take care of their most basic need. Heroic Bobby Strong leads a revolution to overtake this evil empire, so that everyone--rich or poor--can pee freely. "Urinetown" is a musical satire of the legal system, capitalism, bureaucracy, and musical theatre itself.

CONCERT ATTENDEES MUST BE VACCINATED & MASKS MUST BE WORN INDOORS. In 1996, after fifteen years of performing as a solo guitarist, Peter Pupping scheduled a performance at a local coffee shop with then long-time guitar student William Wilson. Peter and William joined forces for this “one time event” and planned an evening of classical, Spanish, and flamenco guitar. Adding a bass player and Latin percussion for this special event produced an overwhelming response. Peter decided to permanently form a quartet that specialized in Latin music but also had a broad range of expertise in many styles. Since then, the quartet has performed throughout Southern California, the Midwest, and Hawaii. The band consists of Peter Pupping and William Wilson on guitars, Jeff Basile (aka Jeff Pekarek) on upright bass, and Roy Gonzales on percussion. Due to an injury, William Wilson will not be performing at this concert. Trumpet player Sidd Basile (Jeff Basile’s son) will join the quartet, adding an interesting new sound to the well-established group. The quartet is very versatile and has an eclectic repertoire spanning centuries of classic art music, world music, jazz, and pop styles. San Diego native Kenneth Bender has been a classical guitar teacher and performer for eighteen years. He has performed solo, and in small and large groups. He has studied with many virtuoso guitarists including Christopher Parkening, during his time at Pepperdine. He will open the concert with some thrilling Spanish guitar pieces. From the gallery: Mt Helix artist Duke Windsor will exhibit new artwork in a solo exhibition from Sept. 21, 2021, through Nov. 8, 2021, at the Encinitas Library, located at 540 Cornish Drive in Encinitas. An Artist’s Reception will take place during Art Night Encinitas on Saturday, Oct. 16 from 6–9 p.m. On view in this exhibit are illuminated contemporary urban and cityscapes, contemporary still life series, and sculpture. Windsor’s Urbanscapes have been exhibited and received awards at juried exhibitions, group shows throughout the U.S., and are held in many private collections throughout the U.S. and Europe. He has produced numerous commissions and military historical works. Windsor works in a variety of mediums including pastel, oil, acrylic, watercolor, linocut block prints, and, most recently, plaster and concrete casted sculptures. Duke states: “My paintings express the wonder and power of light, and I’ve always been drawn to the golden sunlight of Southern California. This professional artistic journey began in 1994. I was walking through alleys on my way to martial arts practice, I noticed how the sunset glowed through the buildings. The golden shafts of light in contrast to the vibrant blues of the shadows greatly influenced my work. I found new inspiration from the radiance of the sun. The reverence and visceral experience I felt from the luminance of traditional Icon works further inspired me. In the art world, gold leaf techniques are often considered merely decorative art. My goal is to advance gold leaf as a contemporary medium.” About the opening reception: Enjoy an evening of visual art on Saturday, Oct. 16, 2021, from 6-9 p.m., as Encinitas civic and local art galleries swing open their doors at Art Night Encinitas. The event celebrates the city’s diverse visual art scene at 7 participating locations and is free to the public. Enjoy live music, refreshments, and shuttles to all locations. Join us for a special Real Word Speakers Panel moderated by New York Times best-selling author Julie Lythcott-Haims. The Real Word Speakers Panel is comprised of youth and young adults who currently live or have lived in foster care after experiencing abuse, abandonment, or neglect by their parents or caregivers. During this presentation, Julie will guide a discussion with the panelists about their experiences in foster care, such as what it’s like to move from home to home, how it feels to be separated from siblings, and how they coped in the face of adversity with the support of their CASA.
