  • Join the San Diego Youth Symphony and its Chimes early childhood music program for a fun, interactive, performance-filled picnic fundraiser and support early childhood music scholarships for families. You can make a difference by giving young children the opportunity to learn through music! Join us for "Picnic with a Purpose," a fun-filled, interactive afternoon featuring music and activities from San Diego Youth Symphony's "Chimes" early childhood music program. Bring your own chair or blanket and enjoy gourmet picnic snacks, entertainment, and performances. Ticket purchases and additional donations will benefit the “Kids Learning Through Music” M. Adler Lindberg Family scholarship fund, which provides music learning opportunities for young children through SDYS’ Chimes program. === Chimes (Childhood Introduction to Music Education, with Smiles) is an SDYS program that highlights one of the most integral phases of child growth and development: the period of growth that takes place from birth to age 5. Chimes classes, for children ages 0-5 and their parents/caregivers, provide meaningful music-making experiences that strengthen family connections and enhance early growth and development. Children develop musical motor skills through singing, movement, rhythm activities, hands-on instrument play, and exposure to a variety of orchestra instruments and genres of music. The program is specifically designed to create pathways for children to participate in ensemble-based programs for youth. Learn more at sdys.org/chimes-picnic.

  • Celebrate the holiday season by creating a traditional Filipino parol! A parol is a Filipino ornamental lantern displayed during the holidays. The word is derived from the Spanish word “farol” which translates to “lantern.” The parol symbolizes light over darkness, so by hanging a parol you’re bringing hope, positivity and love into your home during this festive season. The parol was originally made with strips of bamboo and papel de japon or tissue paper, but for Family Sunday we are going to do a modified version with paper straws and pipe cleaners! This workshop will be led by Alex and Raena Castro, members of the PASACAT Philippine Performing Arts Company based in National City. PASACAT is an acronym for Philippine American Society and Cultural Arts Troupe and is celebrating 51 amazing years of Philippine song, music and dance. The company's mission is to preserve and promote Asian Pacific culture through the arts, thereby, extending goodwill and enhancing cultural understanding. Alex and Raena are members of PASACAT's senior company and have participated in a multitude of performances around the community. Both individuals have a passion for the arts and are excited to be representing their rich culture with Mingei International Museum. Workshop sign-up will begin the day of the event at 10 a.m. by our Education Center. Space is limited. Workshop times: Noon, 1 p.m., 2 p.m., 3 p.m. and 4 p.m.
