Coastal Roots Farm, a non-profit Jewish community farm and education center, welcomes people of all backgrounds to join them on the Farm for a free and festive outdoor Friday night Shabbat series. The first of many will take place on Friday, March 25 from 5 to 7 p.m. The Farm offers an inclusive and engaging picnic-style Shabbat for friends and family to enjoy. The program is simple: the Farm provides the ambiance, challah, candles, and a Farm Tour, and the rest is up to guests! Children’s activities may include arts and crafts, hoola-hoops, books, blocks, and more. Attendees are recommended to bring their own picnic dinner, a beverage, and blankets/lawn chairs and welcome Shabbat with the beautiful sunset and green scenery. Joint choirs from the Greater San Diego Music Coterie and St. Bart’s Episcopal Church of Poway perform Haydn’s Stabat Mater in anticipation of its 254th anniversary since first performance on March 25, 1768 in Vienna. The Greater San Diego Music Coterie, along with St. Bart’s Episcopal Church of Poway, jointly present Stabat Mater by Joseph Haydn in two performances, Saturday, March 19 at 7:30pm and Sunday, March 20 at 4pm, both at St. Bart’s Episcopal Church. With guest conductor John-Luke Addison and accompanied by the Greater San Diego Chamber Orchestra. All performing musicians are fully vaccinated including the booster. The Coronado Historical Association, in partnership with the Coronado Island Film Festival, presents "The Dragon Painter" (1919). This cinematic gem was inducted into the prestigious National Film Registry in 2014 and stars silent-era heartthrob Sessue Hayakawa. In this romance drama, Hayakawa plays an artist desperate to find a sought-after princess muse, played by Hayakawa's wife Tsuru Aoki. This black-and-white film features the exquisite Coronado Japanese Tea Garden as a lush backdrop for the couple’s happy moments with many scenes also filmed in Yosemite National Park. Despite being filmed here in Coronado's Japanese Tea Garden over 103 years ago, this film will be screened for the first time in Coronado at the historic Village Theater. This silent film is accompanied by a complete score by Japanese-American composer Mark Izu.
