The Gaslamp Museum at the Davis-Horton House is thrilled to announce the new exhibit, “A Splendid Decennium: Victorian to Vanguard.” The exhibit will infuse the House with works from internationally-acclaimed fiber artist Marty Ornish, exploring a decade of political, environmental, and feminist perspectives through textile art. “A Splendid Decennium: Victorian to Vanguard” is a retrospective exhibit in two parts, uniting two historical jewels, the Gaslamp Museum at the Davis-Horton House and the Villa Montezuma Museum. Lucas Smith, an artist and resident of Mission Valley, San Diego, California, is making his solo exhibition debut with “Minimal Designs & Organic Shapes” at Gallery 21, Spanish Village Art Center in April. Relocating from the Midwest in 2021, Lucas brings a fresh vision to abstractionism inspired by exploration of America’s Finest City. This contemporary artist is not afraid to use color and showcase his personality through his imagination and creativity. Smith’s palette choices are bold & vibrant. His artwork is a series of layers, each with their own unique significance. Lucas invites his viewers in, not holding back, taking them on a journey through is artwork. Each piece tells a story and seeks to engage with the viewer not only to inspire but to soothe the mind. On Monday, April 8, a partial solar eclipse will be visible in San Diego. The Fleet Science Center is hosting a viewing party outside the Fleet in front of the iconic Bea Evenson Fountain. The event is free and begins at 9 a.m. The partial solar eclipse will begin at 10:03 a.m. when the Moon appears to touch the Sun's edge. The climax, when the Moon is closest to the center of the Sun, will be visible from San Diego at 11:11 a.m. Viewers will see the most exciting moments between 10:45 and 11:45 a.m., with the eclipse concluding at 12:23 p.m. when the Moon leaves the Sun's edge. Local astronomy and eclipse experts from the University of California, San Diego, San Diego State University, and the San Diego Astronomy Association will be available to answer questions. Hands-on demonstration stations will feature crafting eclipse projectors, a fun and free activity that lets you safely observe the eclipse's mesmerizing progression through its shadow projection. Craveology Café and the North Star Science Store will open at 9 a.m. so eclipse viewers can enjoy coffee and breakfast and shop for safe-viewing eclipse glasses and other eclipse-themed merchandise. The Fleet galleries will open at 10 a.m. and feature special eclipse programming, which is included with the price of admission. There will be a live feed of the eclipse in the Fleet's Heikoff Giant Dome Theater. Viewers can see the totality projected on the Dome screen starting at 10:30 a.m. Eclipse-themed activities throughout the day in Studio X, the Fleet's creative makerspace Let your imagination soar in our Space Gallery as you connect with the cosmic event. IT IS NOT SAFE TO LOOK DIRECTLY AT THE SUN DURING A PARTIAL SOLAR ECLIPSE. Looking directly at the eclipse can cause permanent eye damage. Telescopes and binoculars project images of the Sun on a flat surface, similar to a pinhole camera. Special Eclipse glasses are available to purchase from the Fleet's North Star Science Store. If you wish to observe through a telescope, you need a solar filter and cannot use your typical spotting scope to align.

San Diego artist, Liz Kennedy, opened a solo show this month with the City of Encinitas Visual Arts Program: “Bodies in Rest and Motion”. The show continues until May 9, 2024, and Encinitas will hold an Art Night on March 9th, from 5:30 - 8:30 p.m. The event celebrates the artists and the art scene at various locations with music and activities and is free to the public. The show is all figurative work made in the last three years. Thirty artworks, mostly oil paintings with some mixed media works, line the hallway of the Encinitas Community Center. The artist works from models, and/or photographs to create her paintings, but the final result is not photographic, but painterly. “Risk and surrender” are some of Liz Kennedy’s watchwords. She is ready to learn, to fail and to try other flavors besides “pretty”— like illogical, corny, imperfect. The shapes and feelings of people, their bodies, their faces always draw her in, as well as the natural world. She is inspired by the attitudes, bravery and work of artists like Maggie Hambling, Frank Auerbach, David Park, Lynette Yiadom-Boakye, Fairfield Porter and Alice Neel. Her work is unique because of the way personal way she absorbs the world - she respects what she takes in and seeks to honor what she takes in with bravery and attention. The City of Encinitas provides art exhibitions as a service to local artists, providing economic benefit from the sale of art and exposure to a wider audience while beautifying public buildings in Encinitas. The Civic Arts Program, established in 1998, serves artists, arts organizations, and the community through programs in the visual and performing arts, and is overseen by the Cultural Arts Division and Commission for the Arts. Also showing in the same space are artworks from the San Dieguito Art Guild and Misti Washington Gourd and Basket Guild.
