  • FIRST FRIDAY at ARTS DISTRICT | August 4 Immerse yourself in art this Friday with a variety of activities, art exhibitions, workshops and more from ARTS DISTRICT Liberty Station’s artists. You can check out the full lineup of things to enjoy here with a highlight below. Apt 4 Music’s First Friday at Carruth Cellars is coming back on August 4! From 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., attendees of all ages are welcome to stop by and enjoy a free evening of live music featuring musicians from ARTS DISTRICT’s own, Apt 4 Music. San Diego Watercolor Society is pleased to present the opening of a water-based media exhibition titled “Under the Moon.” The opening reception will take place Friday, August 4 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. and will feature over 95 ready-to-hang original paintings. Mockingbird Improv is thrilled to be hosting “All Hands on Deck,” a wild and wacky improv game show from 9 p.m. to 10:15 p.m.. Veltz Fine Art Gallery will be hosting a closing reception for their exhibition titled “Vital,” which features works from three artists including Kenda Francis, Laura Lehmnan, and Colleen Veltz and raises awareness for the local Project Wildlife under the guardianship of the Humane Society from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. San Diego Craft Collective will have their doors open for a community mending event taking place from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.. Kids and adults are also welcome to stop by the studio for a free Vision Board craft. April 13 & 14 from 9 – 11:30 a.m. both days In this 5-hour workshop, students will learn to carve a decorative spoon in basswood in the European carving tradition. Students will learn and apply the following skills that are needed to carve a simple decorative spoon: - Carving safety - Honing/sharpening - Tracing and transfer of the spoon layout to a piece of basswood - Hollowing out the spoon; carving the back; and removing thickness under the handle - Carving out the handle - Sanding the spoon and handle Finish can be applied at home (instructor can offer shellac, which is non-toxic) This class is designed for the beginner as well as more experienced carvers. Different techniques and styles make it interesting for all skill levels. There is no prerequisite for this class. All of the necessary tools and materials will be available to students for this class. It is recommended that you bring your own safety gear (eye protection, hearing protection, dust mask, gloves). We have hearing and eye protection available if you do not have your own. No experience necessary.
