Welcome to the electrifying underworld of San Diego’s Depression-era taxi dance halls, where a dance could cost you a dime, a chance at romance, or a bullet in the back! San Diego Central Library welcomes Marivi Soliven, in conversation with Lee Ann Kim, for a presentation and book signing of her exciting new novel "Taxi Dancer," based on a true story set in San Diego’s downtown historic Stingaree District. San Diego swing masters and jazz band, Zzymzzy Quartet, will be slinging Prohibition-era hot swing music to make you dance from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Period attire encouraged.

Local music therapy nonprofit Resounding Joy presents the 8th Annual Living Your Dreams Concert + Fundraiser featuring the Sounds of Service band, made up of active-duty military and veterans who use music to connect, heal and share their stories. The band has played in venues throughout San Diego, from the USS Midway and San Diego International Airport to events on the campus of San Diego State University. Attendees will enjoy an evening of live music including covers and original songs, special guest performances, food, beverages and raffle baskets. Proceeds will fund the Sounds of Service program, which provides individual and group music therapy for service members, veterans, first responders and their families. This beautiful compact book is like a seed. A seed carries within itself everything necessary to live and transform into something utterly unrecognizable. Within a seed's compact outer coating lies the entirety of the plant being the seed will become. So it is with "The Serviceberry," contained within the beautiful cover of the book lies everything the dominant culture in our world needs to entirely transform. Together over 3 weeks we will read the book and discuss and explore three key topics: Week 1: Relationship Week 2: Extraction Week 3: Reciprocity The purpose of this community book club is to come together and ask ourselves at this powerful moment in human history: How to we learn to love the natural world? How do we give back? What does it mean to live in right relationship to ourselves, each other and all of the living beings of the earth? Celebrate Oktoberfest with a twist at Ballast Point Little Italy on Saturday, September 26 from 12 to 8 p.m. Guests can “putt” their way through the all-day celebration featuring $5 pints, big soft pretzel specials, stein hoisting contests, Oktoberfest outfit competitions and patio games. Presented by the Department of Visual Arts and the Suraj Israni Center for Cinematic Arts at UC San Diego, "Off-Screen Space" includes experimental narrative films, video art, multi-channel video installations and a cinematic performance - all made by artists who reside or created the work on the west coast and in the region. The works in the show exist across every surface of the gallery and expand the experience and expectations of the screen. “Off-screen space” is a term used primarily in cinema that refers to a sensation that the image, sound, action and ideas can move past the edges of the screen. In this exhibition, the screen is simultaneously the object, the suggestion and the idea.
