"Dancing Outdoors: Take 4" highlights some of the diverse dance companies and artists that reside in Encinitas. This talk will focus on amazing geological forces and events from the last 200 million years that have shaped the San Diego County we see today. From regional tectonics to massive volcanism, uplift and erosion, and the many current infrastructure challenges San Diego currently faces, Mike Thacker will tell the story behind our broad mesas, dramatic coastlines, canyons, and wide valleys. Attendees will be sure to come away with a deepened understanding of and appreciation for the geological history of our unique region. About the Presenter: Mike Thacker is a retired Senior Staff Research and Development Scientist at Thermo Fisher Scientific. He has a B.S. in zoology from San Diego State University and studied anthropology and archaeology at University of California Santa Barbara, Palomar College, and San Diego State University. He is a former member of the Board of Trustees for the San Diego Archaeological Center and is a volunteer teaching assistant for Palomar College archaeological excavation field school and survey programs. Mike is passionate about his home of San Diego and leads interpretive hikes for the San Dieguito River Park and San Dieguito River Valley Conservancy. The National City Host Lions Club's 80th Annual 4th of July Carnival returns to Kimball Park from July 1–5, 2026, bringing five days of family-friendly fun, entertainment, delicious food, thrilling rides, and community celebration. Guests can enjoy a variety of carnival attractions, including rides, games, live entertainment, face painting, and an impressive lineup of food vendors. Featured vendors include Zeze's Cuisine, Pi Food, Kujo's Eats, Mr. Joey's Tacos, Turo Churros & Donuts, The Sweet Spot, along with carnival favorites such as nachos, kettle corn, sweet treats, and more. The carnival will be open: Wednesday, July 1 – Friday, July 3: 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday, July 4 & Sunday, July 5: 1 p.m. to 11 p.m. Admission is free, and ride wristbands will be available for purchase onsite. The celebration culminates with a spectacular Fourth of July fireworks show on Saturday, July 4, at 9 p.m., lighting up the sky above Kimball Park.
