This exhilarating show is a beloved staple in San Diego, with its main purpose being to bring exposure and support to growing choreographers in the community. In 2023, we removed the age requirements to include dancemakers who emerge at any age in life. Read about the 2024 finalists here. About the showcase and awards: San Diego Dance Theater is thrilled to present the annual Emerging Choreographer's Showcase & Awards! The event formerly known as Young Choreographer's Showcase & Prize has evolved to reflect the agelessness of dance and support the pursuit of growth at any point in life. There is no longer a maximum age limit for eligibility, and we hope to see even more incredible dancing and dance-making! Finalists will compete for three prizes, as voted on by YOU, the audience, and the panel of judges. Grand prize is $1000 and a night in Live Arts Fest 2024 awarded to "Best Overall." "Best Dancer" and "Audience Favorite" both receive a $500 prize, with "Best Dancer" also receiving an invitation to dance at a future SDDT event. • THE ROBOTS BY CAROLYN CHEN A WORLD PREMIERE CHAMBER OPERA Sung in English with supertitles in English and Spanish. Approximate running time 1 hr and 45 minutes with one intermission. This genre-bending operatic adaptation of an early sci-fi play from 1920 — R.U.R. (Rossum’s Universal Robots) by Karel Čapek — takes place on an isolated island where a workforce of mass-produced humanoid robots gradually gains self-awareness and revolts against the human creators. Čapek’s play first coined the term “robot” from the Czech word for “slave”, and was a strong condemnation of exploitative labor practices in the early 20th Century. Performed by a diverse cast of some of the best singers in the region, Chen’s exuberant and eclectic score will come to life in this revolutionary new production, immersing the entire audience into the action of the robot uprising! If you would like to enlist in the Robot Army, we encourage you to bring a colander from home. It's the only way our Robots can tell humans apart from the more sophisticated Robot Worker. About the composer: CAROLYN CHEN has made music for supermarket, demolition district, and the dark. Her work reconfigures the everyday to retune habits of our ears through sound, text, light, and movement. Her studies of the guqin, a Chinese zither traditionally played for private meditation in nature, have informed her thinking on listening in social spaces. Recent projects include an audio essay on a scream and commissions for Klangforum Wien and the LA Phil New Music Group. Described by The New York Times as “the evening’s most consistently alluring … a quiet but lush meditation,” Chen’s work has been supported by the American Academy in Berlin, the Fulbright Program, ASCAP Foundation’s Fred Ho Award, Paul and Daisy Soros Fellowships for New Americans, Stanford University Sudler Prize, and commissions from Green Umbrella, MATA Festival, and impuls Festival. The work has been presented at festivals and exhibitions in 25 countries, at venues including Carnegie Hall, the Kitchen, Disney Hall (Los Angeles), Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, the Guggenheim Bilbao, and the Institute for Provocation (Beijing). She has been fortunate to work with ensembles including SurPlus, Southland, San Francisco Contemporary Music Players, Aperture, andPlay, loadbang, koan, Dog Star Orchestra, The Reader’s Chorus, Pamplemousse, Chamber Cartel, orkest de ereprijs, S.E.M., red fish blue fish, Wild Rumpus, and The Syndicate for New Arts. Writing and recordings are available in MusikTexte, Experimental Music Yearbook, The New Centennial Review, Leonardo Music Journal, Perishable, the wulf, and Quakebasket. Chen earned a Ph.D. in music from UC San Diego, and a M.A. in Modern Thought and Literature and B.A. in music from Stanford University, with an honors thesis on free improvisation and radical politics. • Under the moniker Still Woozy, Portland-based singer-songwriter/producer Sven Gamsky makes psychedelic alternative music with a homespun mix of acoustic and electronic instruments. On his debut album released in 2021, "If This Isn’t Nice, I Don’t Know What Is," Gamsky ultimately redefines the limits of modern pop, introducing elements of soul, folk and psychedelia into a wildly infectious sound that immediately leaves a lasting impact. He shared an ingeniously detailed body of work, including beloved singles “Window,” “That’s Life” and “Woof,” and graces each song with the uplifting energy he brought to the stage at major festivals like Coachella and Lollapalooza and a sold out If This Isn’t Nice Tour across North America and Europe. With his distinctive blend of dreamy melodies and innovative soundscapes, Still Woozy continues to captivate audiences, solidifying his place as a unique and influential force in the contemporary music landscape. With a sophomore album, "Loveseat," due for release on June 28, Still Woozy returns with a new single “Shotput” out now. This is a rental event of the Rady Shell, presented by AEG Goldenvoice; the San Diego Symphony does not appear on this concert. • “Harmony has been at the center of our musical experience and expression from the very beginning,” says mandolinist/singer Lincoln Mick. “Often, when we’re unsure of what to do next, we’ll say, ‘Let’s just all sing together.’ We’ve changed a lot as a band over the years, but harmony has always been the backbone of what we do, which has led us to create all these background vocals that not only support the lead, but have a life and character of their own.” This sense of harmony and hospitality has been central to The Arcadian Wild’s story from its earliest days. Named for a utopian landscape in Greek mythology, the group got its start roughly a decade ago, when Isaac Horn and Lincoln Mick met as choir students at Nashville’s Lipscomb University. While both had grown up on alt-rock and punk, they quickly bonded over a shared love for American roots music and the endless possibilities that lay beyond the boundaries of tradition and expectation. In January 2020, Horn and Mick welcomed fiddler Bailey Warren into the band full-time. Visit: https://www.museumofmakingmusic.org/events/arcadian-wild The Arcadian Wild on Instagram / Facebook
