The La Mesa Village Association's (LMVA) 10th Annual Holiday in the Village event brings the holiday cheer with enhanced holiday traditions that are fully immersed in La Mesa’s charm offering FREE, winter holiday-themed activities during the one-day event for the community to enjoy. The annual Holiday in the Village takes place in the heart of downtown La Mesa along La Mesa Blvd. between 4th Street to Spring Street on Saturday, December 13 from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m. Guests of all ages can take to the “ice” for skating on a synthetic rink. The “Winter Wonderland” kids area is filled with inflatable bouncies. Families can cozy up at the “Mrs. Claus Reading Nook” to listen to holiday themed stories. Putt your way through a Miniature Golf Course full of holiday cheer. Snap a selfie at the holiday-themed photo op stop. And, go on a scavenger hunt along the “Elf Adventure Trail” where guests can seek out elves “hiding” throughout our local businesses and can enter to win one of the elves! Treasured favorites returning to the Holiday in the Village event include “Selfies with Santa”, strolling carolers, holiday performances by local schools, clubs and more, fun-themed holiday stilt walkers, and “Elf Yourself Hats” where guests can outfit themselves in whimsical elf hats. The event will also feature a variety of food vendors selling fresh popped kettle corn, hot food items, beverages and more, plus a variety of vendors to shop for unique holiday gifts! Upcycle Your Own Item! Learn to Carve & Block Print! Thursday, December 4, 6-8 p.m. Have you ever wanted to print your own designs on shirts and bags?! In this 2-hour workshop, you’ll learn the art of relief printing! Students will learn to design and carve their own linoleum stamp and block print an image onto fabric. We invite you to upcycle fabric from your own wardrobe or home for this class, so grab a well-loved favorite item or something that could use a fun refresh and begin imagining some fun designs you might carve and print! Because this class focuses on upcycling, please bring your own fabric to block print on. This can be clothing, a tote bag or something else. You may bring more than one item and the instructor can help you choose which to print on in class. We recommend you avoid fabrics that are especially thin, like satins and silks. All other tools and materials needed for this class will be supplied for use. In this Clay Happy Hour, we’ll create a one-of-a-kind candle holder using simple handbuilding techniques. Perfect for gifting—or keeping to spark your own joy! This session is all about exploring clay in a relaxed, beginner-friendly environment. Whether you’re a beginner or just looking for a new way to unwind, this open studio setting is a great chance to get your hands messy, meet new people, and let your creativity ring out. All materials are provided, and you’ll get to take home your handmade creation after it’s fired and ready for pick-up in 3-4 weeks. Saturday, November 22, 9:30 a.m. - 12 p.m. Kintsugi is the ancient Japanese technique of repairing ceramics with gold. In Japanese Zen aesthetics, broken bowls and dishes should continue to attract our respect and attention. The broken pieces should be reassembled and glued back together with a lacquer that is inflected with gold powder. There should be no attempt to hide or disguise the breaks but rather to make something artful out of them. Kintsugi is a wonderful metaphor for life. We all experience difficulties and traumatic events in our lives. Applying Kintsugi to our lives means being bold, rather than hiding the so-called cracks and imperfections in ourselves. In this workshop you will learn a little about the history and philosophy of kintsugi while repairing two ceramic pieces to take home. Learn to embellish your pieces using both gold mica powders and gold leaf colors. Students will also receive complete instructions and a supply list, as well as receiving a sample of your choice of three gold mica powder colors. Feel free to bring in your own piece for me to look at and give you some advice on. We MAY NOT in all likelihood, repair your piece during class, but you will get good insight on how to proceed at home. All materials are included. Students will learn two distinct ways of highlighting the breaks of their provided ceramic pieces and will take home a unique piece.
