Stained glass is unusual among the arts because of its direct relationship with light. When light passes through colored glass, different values, textures, and densities combine to form an extraordinary palette. Explore this magic by creating your own unique leaded stained-glass panel. In this 7-week course, you will learn from stained glass professional Lisa Maywood as you complete one or more 2-dimensional panels that will transform any room or space. The enrollment fee covers the cost of basic drawing materials, lead, solder, cement, and the use of the tools and machinery. Glass will be procured by each student on their own outside of class. Blue Dolpin Glass is a great local source in San Diego. If you prefer your own supplies, please bring your own colored pencils and paper that is larger than 12″x12″ to the first class as you plan your project(s). It is also recommended that you bring your own safety gear (eye protection, dust mask, gloves). We have eye protection available if you do not have your own. There is no prerequisite for this class. Join us for an engaging 1-day symposium, Literature and Religion in Modern Iran, co-hosted by the UC San Diego Library and Middle East Studies program. Commencing at 2:30 p.m., the symposium kicks off with a compelling keynote address by Professor Nasrin Rahimieh from UC Irvine. Professor Rahimieh’s speech, Fictions of Self in Contemporary Iranian Women’s Writing, promises to offer intriguing insights into the literary landscape of Iran. Following the keynote, attendees will have the opportunity to engage in a Q&A session. The symposium continues with a series of illuminating presentations by esteemed scholars. Domenico Ingenito (UCLA) will explore the intriguing relationship between mysticism and sexuality in the literary and critical works of Forugh Farrokhzad. Aria Fani (University of Washington) will present his recent publication, “Reading Across Borders: Afghans, Iranians, and Literary Nationalism,” which offers fresh perspectives on literary nationalism within the region. Additionally, World History and Cultures Librarian Farshad Sonboldel (UC San Diego Library) will examine the profound impact of religious poetic forms on the process of literary modernization in Iran. Throughout the event, discussions will be expertly moderated by Babak Rahimi (UC San Diego), ensuring a dynamic and thought-provoking exchange of ideas. An ancient and eco-centered craft, Natural Dyes are a place to connect with the beauty and bounty of our planet’s rich offerings while creating with color and using our hands and minds to refresh our homes, wardrobes and to create one-of-a-kind palettes. In this hands-on workshop students will learn the entire process of natural dyeing while incorporating creative design elements through resist dye methods of Shibori. Each student will Shibori and hand-dye three natural fiber silk &/or bamboo scarves or squares to take home or gift to loved ones. If you’ve ever looked into using Natural Dyes, you may have been intimidated by the many facets of the process. We’ll cover them all–scour, mordant, preparation of natural dye, basic Shibori dye resist methods, natural dyeing & finishing–in great detail so you can get to creating with natural color today. All materials included. Students will receive an ‘Intro to Natural Dyes’ booklet that covers the entire process in detail, three natural fiber scarves to dye and Shibori, and samples from the dye pots. "Contained Visions: John Thomson (1837-1921), Photography, and the Chinese Export Image." Can China and the Chinese be contained in an image? Acting as expert, traveler, and witness, the photographer John Thomson (1837-1921) appears to answer this question in the affirmative with the first photographic book on China, his monumental "Illustrations of China and Its People" (1873-74). However, within the documentary intentions of his photographs run complex interactions with earlier representations of China as seen in Chinese export art and its producers. This talk will address Thomson’s reproductions and imitations of the fanciful and fictive export image, and his engagement with the imagined Chinese artist. Refresh your wardrobe with personalized creativity! In this workshop, you will design and sew your own quilt blocks and attach them to a pre-loved item of your choosing (we recommend you bring a tote bag or jacket*). You’ll leave with a one-of-a-kind item you’ll be proud to use or wear. Intuitive quilting is the process of creating a quilt (or quilt block) using your intuition and sense of creativity. You’ll select fabric scraps in shapes and colors that you’re drawn to without too much planning. We’ll move through the process without limits, allowing for creativity to flow freely. This course is for beginners and seasoned quilters alike. If you’ve never used a sewing machine before, you’ll be guided on how to sew simple straight lines, gentle curves and how to appliqué. If you’ve sewn apparel or quilts using patterns before, you’ll be encouraged to put away the “rules” and sometimes rigid guidelines of traditional quilting to tap into a more freeform and intuitive way of quilting. No experience necessary. Ages 16+ welcome! *Please bring items made from woven material only (non-stretch). Sweatshirts and anything made from knit fabric are not suitable for use in this class.
