Light Up a Life blends inspirational messages, music, and a memorial ceremony to lift the hearts of those touched by loss, illness or sorrow. Admission and parking are free. Registration is required by November 3. All attendees will have the opportunity to light a candle during the memorial ceremony. In support of The Elizabeth Hospice’s nonprofit mission, a donation of $50 is suggested. This annual award honors artistic expression with a cash prize, exhibition opportunities, and spotlights artists in the San Diego to Ensenada, Mexico region whose outstanding achievements in the field of visual arts merit recognition. The San Diego Visual Arts Network is pleased to announce the four recipients of the 2023 San Diego Art Prize: Mely Barragan, Anya Gallaccio, Janelle Iglesias, and Joe Yorty. Recipients were nominated by 17 local arts professionals and selected by an esteemed panel of curators from respected institutions: Pedro Alonzo - Adjunct Curator, Dallas Contemporary, Dallas, Texas, Susanna Temkin - Curator at El Museo del Barrio, New York, New York, Kathryn Kraczon - Director of Exhibitions of the Brown Arts Institute (BAI) and Chief Curator of the David Winton Bell Gallery at Brown University, Providence Rhode Island. Join us on October 28 from 7-9:30 p.m. for our next Open Studios. With Halloween on the horizon, guests are encouraged to let their freak flag fly! Ariana Warren and Chris Warren’s musical performance will also be inspired by eerie, otherworldly elements. In honor of Dia de los Muertos, longtime resident artist Felix Diaz is leading our efforts to include some Day of the Dead celebrations and practices, too. * The Diaz Trio will perform a series of SONES, a traditional musical form originating from various regions in Mexico and used for events like Dia de los Muertos. During this lively, rhythmic, and danceable music, the audience is invited and encouraged to participate, thus creating a celebratory atmosphere. * We’ll also have an ofrenda (altar) to honor both loved ones we’ve lost from our own S4A community and pioneering Mexican surrealist women artists. * Tamales, Pan de Muerto (sweet bread), and Café de Olla (spiced coffee) will be available for purchase, along with our usual fare of snacks and beverages.
