Learn to sew your own unique pajama pants this fall! This 3-week course spans a total of 9 hours of instruction. Learn the sewing basics – from the importance of following grainlines, to how to properly measure your body and read a pattern. Learn your way around a sewing machine and complete a pair of your very own homemade pajama pants! Instructor Tracey Herriot will show you simple troubleshooting tips, and walk students through the steps of sewing their own garment. You will be able to choose from a fun selection of flannel prints. However, if you’d like to bring your own materials, please bring 2.5 meters of flannel fabric and pre-wash it before the workshop. You may bring your own sewing machine to learn on or borrow one of ours. No experience necessary. All materials included. Even if you don’t speak any of the six languages the members of New York’s Banda Magda sing in, you still will be transported into beautiful imagery with tales of love and devotion, as strong as the bonds between the band’s diverse musicians (Greece, Japan, Argentina, USA, Colombia, Brazil, Turkey, Israel, UK). Led by firecracker performer, composer and multi-instrumentalist Magda Giannikou, Banda Magda moves from samba to French chanson, from Greek folk tunes to Colombian cumbia and Afro-Peruvian lando. They have traveled to more than 22 countries on five continents combining whirlwind tours of music, invigorating transformative workshops and magical interactive moments led by Magda’s uncanny ability to engage the audience. Trained in film scoring, arranging and music production at Berklee, Greek-born singer, film scorer, and composer Magda Giannikou has collaborated with everyone from Kronos Quartet to Snarky Puppy. In almost every facet of the music industry, She founded Banda Magda in 2011. This group of close musical friends turn Giannikou’s songs into engaging romps that have won them a spot with Carnegie Hall Musical Explorers Series, as well as performances at discerning venues and festivals such as Webster Hall, Irving Plaza, The Kennedy Center, The Jefferson Center, Celebrate Brooklyn, Jazz al Parque, St. Moritz Festival Da Jazz, the Chicago World Music Festival, Atlanta Jazz Festival and WOMAD. After the success of their brilliantly colorful albums, "Amour, t’es là?" (Top 10 Billboard World Music Charts, NPR’s All Songs Considered, First Listen, NPR’s 10 favorite World Music Albums 2013), and "Yerakina" (co-produced by GRAMMY Award-winners Michael League and Fab Dupont), the Banda is in pre-production of their third opus, the vibrant, technicolor Tigre. The Humanities Center is delighted to welcome as Knapp Chair, Jeff Drazen, PhD, a USD alumnus and professor in the Department of Oceanography at the University of Hawaii, Manoa, and senior fellow of the Joint Institute of Marine and Atmospheric Research. Dr. Drazen’s research has explored the structure of deep-sea and pelagic food webs and has evaluated abyssal fish and scavenger populations in areas that will be mined for metal resources. In this lecture, Dr. Drazen will explore the environmental hazards of deep-sea mining.

Come and unlock the magic of music & clay as you embark on a creative journey! Do you know what an ocarina is? It’s like a flute, but instead of a tube, the sound is produced in a chamber. Join us for an immersive and hands-on ceramic workshop where you’ll uncover the ancient art of crafting your very own ocarina, a whimsical and enchanting musical instrument. Throughout this comprehensive workshop, you’ll learn the step-by-step process of creating an ocarina from raw clay to a beautiful musical instrument. Under the guidance of our instructor, Israel Basurto, you’ll delve into the world of ceramics, exploring essential techniques, and shaping clay with your hands. From molding the body of the ocarina to intricately carving the finger holes and crafting the mouthpiece, you’ll acquire the skills to bring your musical vision to life. Embrace your creativity as you personalize your ocarina with a variety of decorative techniques, such as incising patterns, adding texture, and experimenting with underglazes (…all time permitting! Some folks work faster than others). By the end of the workshop, you’ll have not only crafted a one-of-a-kind ocarina but also developed a deeper appreciation for the ancient craft of ceramics. "Glimmers of Grace" is a brief survey of the artistic career of Grace Gray-Adams covering works produced from 1976 to the present. An art student at San Diego Mesa College from the first day it opened on Feburary 1964, we are honored to welcome Gray-Adams back with an exhibition that spans multiple themes. As many other older artists, Gray-Adams is grappling with her legacy and the final destination of her works, this is an opportunity for the San Diego audience to get familiar with her work. Centered on spirituality and the female body, Gray-Adams has created pieces such as an installation that exposes sexual abuse in the Catholic Church and a video celebrating the freedom and creativity of twelfth-century nun Hildegard of Bingen. Her artmaking process is guided by a fundamental desire to find ‘glimmers of grace’ in life. Parking is FREE during opening reception, 4-7 p.m. on Thursday Oct. 5. Park in Lot #1 on STAFF spots. Salsa Night: Bring your dancing shoes! 5:30 p.m. – Salsa class 6:30 p.m. – Performance About Manny Cepeda Orchestra | Since 2018, the Manny Cepeda Orchestra has been featured on Pandora Radio and as Spotify Artists, and they were added to Apple Music and YouTube music in 2020. One of the most popular small groups of the Manny Cepeda Orchestra organization is the MCO Quartet, ranked as the No. 1 Salsa Quartet in San Diego. Since 2010 the group has played a series of public concerts, “Salsa Under the Stars,” which can now be heard at the Headquarters District at Seaport Village every third Friday of the month and Little Italy’s Piazza Della Famiglia on the fourth Wednesday of each month. Manny Cepeda, a Puerto Rican composer, arranger, and leader of the Manny Cepeda Orchestra, has just released a new CD, Roots/Raices and Padre Querido, featuring his original lyrics and musical arrangements. Manny drew on the early childhood teachings of his famous uncle Rafael Cepeda and dedicated this CD in his honor as well as paying tribute to his father, barber/musician Don Leonides Rivera. The core of Manny’s group is Xavier Quintero (San Diego), Andy Fraguela (Panama), and Henry “Kiko” Jimenez (Puerto Rico). Dance Lesson Led by Maria Caligagan| Maria Caligagan’s impressive artistic professional career spans over 45 years. Her early training started at the Boston School of Ballet. At just 18 years old she moved to New York City to follow her dream of becoming a professional dancer. Her first big break was being selected as an original cast member in Jerome Robbin’s Broadway, performing at the Tony Awards, and then being promoted to a principal role. Other performing credits include ABC’s movie Cinderella, starring Brandy and Whitney Houston, as well as numerous TV commercials and industrials. As the Co-owner of Heatwave Productions, Event Entertainment and Salsa Inferno dance company, Maria has produced and directed hundreds of corporate events over the past 25 years. A choreographic highlight would be several productions with the Old Globe Theatre, including The Odyssey, The Taming of the Shrew, and Kingdom. In addition, Maria is a Senior Continuing Lecturer in the Theatre and Dance Department at UCSD with a teaching career of almost 30 years.
