From Project [BLANK]: Join us for THE SALTY SERIES: our take-over of Bread & Salt in Barrio Logan, an experimental center for the arts, with concerts on the Third Friday of every month. Grab a drink, make a new friend, and feast your ears on the most savory experimental music in town. The Salty Series kicks off with a film screening of Alejandro Jodorowsky’s 1973 avant garde masterpiece, THE HOLY MOUNTAIN, with live electronic score improvisation by sound artist JOE CANTRELL. According to Cantrell, "Alejandro Jodorowsky’s [work] is as visually striking as it is difficult – a journey that is unrelenting in its surreal maximalism. At times serene, grotesque, and comical, the sense of the uncanny never leaves the viewer. It is this focus on imagery that is intensely unusual that I find so fitting for a live performance setting. My intention is to use these fantastical images as a visual representation of noises and sounds, similar to a type of music notation called a graphical score. These scores use static pictures instead of notes to convey musical ideas. The images used are often abstract and unusual and open to a wide variety of interpretations by the musician. I feel the challenging and dazzling visual world that Jodorowsky paints is a fitting filmic analog to this graphical tradition, and one that promises to create impactful and memorable sonic and visual pairing." San Diego Craft Collective welcomes Ashley Lohr, a special guest artist and educator from Southeast Alaska this month! In this workshop, students will be introduced to the art of powder enamel and learn the skills to create 2-pairs of torch-fired enamel earrings and 1 pendant. Students will be using lead-free Thompson enamel on copper metal. Enamel is a glassy compound applied to and bonded by heat (fusion) to a metal surface. We will be using a handheld butane torch as our heat source. Learn how to prep, sift enamel, clean fire scale, and fire with a handheld butane torch: • Students will have their own enameling station/ will not be sharing materials. • Choose from a variety of copper metal shapes to enamel on. • Work with 11 Thompson powder enamel colors to choose your palette. • Use stencils, sgraffito tools, and frit to create your own unique designs. All jewelry created will be ready to wear at the end of the workshop.

No experience necessary. Ages 14+ Welcome! Natural dyes are super popular right now, and for all the right reasons. And ’tis the season to learn to dye with plentiful acorns & galls! In instructor Jeanine Ertl’s experiential workshop, you’ll learn the basics of dyeing with both Acorns and Galls, ancient dye-stuffs native to Southern California. You’ll also learn to Shibori dye two gorgeous warm browns and dipping for inky charcoal grey highlights. Learn to create your own creative color and pattern with the bounty of the season. Students will receive: • Instruction on Acorn & Gall Dye prep • Instruction on basic Shibori technique • 2 Natural fiber fabric pieces to Shibori & dye • Fabric samples from each natural dye vat All materials included.

Come and unlock the magic of music & clay as you embark on a creative journey! Do you know what an ocarina is? It’s like a flute, but instead of a tube, the sound is produced in a chamber. Join us for an immersive and hands-on ceramic workshop where you’ll uncover the ancient art of crafting your very own ocarina, a whimsical and enchanting musical instrument. Throughout this comprehensive workshop, you’ll learn the step-by-step process of creating an ocarina from raw clay to a beautiful musical instrument. Under the guidance of our instructor, Israel Basurto, you’ll delve into the world of ceramics, exploring essential techniques, and shaping clay with your hands. From molding the body of the ocarina to intricately carving the finger holes and crafting the mouthpiece, you’ll acquire the skills to bring your musical vision to life. Embrace your creativity as you personalize your ocarina with a variety of decorative techniques, such as incising patterns, adding texture, and experimenting with underglazes (…all time permitting! Some folks work faster than others). By the end of the workshop, you’ll have not only crafted a one-of-a-kind ocarina but also developed a deeper appreciation for the ancient craft of ceramics. No prior ceramic experience is necessary. All materials and tools will be provided. 12 yrs+

In this workshop, you will design and sew your own quilt blocks and attach them to a pre-loved item of your choosing (we recommend you bring a tote bag or jacket*). You’ll leave with a one-of-a-kind item you’ll be proud to use or wear. Intuitive quilting is the process of creating a quilt (or quilt block) using your intuition and sense of creativity. You’ll select fabric scraps in shapes and colors that you’re drawn to without too much planning. We’ll move through the process without limits, allowing for creativity to flow freely. This course is for beginners and seasoned quilters alike. If you’ve never used a sewing machine before, you’ll be guided on how to sew simple straight lines, gentle curves and how to appliqué. If you’ve sewn apparel or quilts using patterns before, you’ll be encouraged to put away the “rules” and sometimes rigid guidelines of traditional quilting to tap into a more freeform and intuitive way of quilting. No experience necessary. Ages 16+ welcome! *Please bring items made from woven material only (non-stretch). Sweatshirts and anything made from knit fabric are not suitable for use in this class. S P A C E Showcase Ed. 5 is a final presentation of our 2023 S P A C E Alliance Studio Residency program resident artists, Nhu Nuygen, Lesly Rodriguez, Aisha Reddick, Allie Miks, and Sam Briseno-Jimenez. Through a 10-week artist residency process in collaboration with DISCO RIOT’s community partners Art Produce, Balletcenter Studios, and Malashock Dance, our selected resident artists delved into research and development of new works.
