Show your commitment to positive change in San Diego County by volunteering with us September 8 for San Diego Gives Day of Service, a one-day, countywide collective volunteer effort to help support the transformational work of San Diego County nonprofits. This is an opportunity to enjoy a morning with family and friends helping to take care of our river bed. Careful removal of trash from the San Diego River Bed improves the health of the river ecosystem and all the creatures that depend upon it. Volunteers will bag trash and place items in provided containers T-Shirts will be handed out to all who pre-register and bottled water will be on hand if you forget to bring your own, compliments of United Way. * Families, corporate groups and service groups are welcome * Minors must be accompanied by an adult * Closed-toed shoes and long pants required * Sun protection is highly recommended: hat, sunscreen, sunglasses, etc * Bring a reusable water bottle * Tools and supplies will be provided... BUT... * ... If you have a favorite pair of work gloves, snake gaiters, or 'grabbing' tool to pick up trash, then please feel free to bring them! * Restroom facilities available * Plan for walking on uneven terrain, stooping, and bending We hope to see you here! Quartet Nouveau returns to the garden at Art Produce joined by baritone Jonathan Nussman for a free community concert. This one hour performance features the "Juliet Letters" by Elvis Costello and The Brodsky Quartet. This piece was inspired by a Veronese academic who had taken on the task of replying to letters addressed to "Juliet Capulet." The idea of what was in these letters provided the inspiration for this work and Costello said about the music, "It's not a rock opera. It's a new thing." Quartet Nouveau is a San Diego based string quartet and is happy to collaborate with Jonathan whose varied interests include opera, theater, improvisation and chamber music. 4 Tuesdays each month from 4 – 5:30 p.m. Ages 13-18 welcome! Lead instructor, Steffi Dotson, teaches this class that covers the properties of wood, machine safety and woodworking basics. Students will learn woodworking techniques, and safe practice of machine operations will be taught. Depending on the specific project, joinery techniques, proper sanding and finishing are part of the curriculum. Each attendee will make their own project. All materials are included. The Corner Frame Shop & Leucadia Art Gallery on 101 in Encinitas, is hosting a fundraiser with all proceeds going to the families/victims of the recent fire in Lahaina, Maui. The event will include a live art auction, raffle, hula dancers, live music and refreshments. The gallery is also collecting gift cards, which will be distributed directly to Maui fire victims. The gift cards can also be dropped off at the gallery through Sept. 15, 2023.

Organic Gardening is proven to have a positive, grounding impact on mood and brain chemistry for all ages, but especially for children. Working in the garden helps kids grow & expand in so many ways! Children practice and hone fine motor skills; use their five senses to learn about their environment; get excited about food and making healthy, nutritious choices; feel connected to a larger picture and purpose in life. When you grow your own food, you are more connected to it, and children are more apt to eat things they’ve grown in the garden. In Organic Garden Club, children learn about plot planning, companion planting, maintenance, harvesting, seed saving, composting, and activities that progress the garden forward. Garden Club gives the children an opportunity to become good stewards of the garden and realize the impact of their efforts. Every club session will include a harvest-culinary-prepared treat so they can taste the goodness that comes from the garden. Our Organic & Edible Garden is a wonderful way to teach the community about how gardening in a small space can be quite abundant. The garden hosts several varieties of organic fresh fruits, herbs and vegetables, and is maintained by Craft Collective and super-gardener and educator Mia Vaughnes, of Good Neighbor Gardens. Three headliner comedians to perform for 2nd annual charity comedy show benefitting The Women’s First Step House of North County, Saturday, Sept. 9 in Vista. Comedians who have appeared on Dry Bar Comedy Special, David Letterman, Jimmy Kimmel Live, Disney and The Boston Comedy Festival will raise laughs and cheers to support women in recovery from alcoholism on September 9 at the Vista Civic Center. It is a cultural crisis both nationally and locally: what was previously a 3-1 ratio for risky drinking habits in men versus women is closer to 1-to-1 globally. 2019 U.S. data shows that younger women reported drinking and getting drunk at higher rates than men. Women suffer health consequences of alcohol — liver disease, heart disease and cancer — more quickly than men and even with lower levels of consumption. The Women’s First Step House of North County (WFSHNC) is a registered 501(c)3 non-profit organization that provides a 10-day non-medical detox from alcohol, for free, to women in need. It’s the first of its kind in North County, offering the basic necessities to their guests (shelter, food, clothing) as they begin their journey in sobriety. The Mission of the WFSNHC is to be a house of hope and offer a new beginning for women suffering from alcoholism. It was founded in 2019 and opened in March 2021.
