Bodhi Tree Concerts presents world premiere of a bilingual Spanish/English chamber opera, "Pancho Rabbit and the Coyote," by Pulitzer Prize-winning, GRAMMY-nominated, Opera Hall of Fame and Metropolitan Opera composer, San Diego’s own Anthony Davis, with a libretto by playwright and UCSD professor Allan Havis and Spanish text by Laura Fuentes. "Pancho Rabbit and the Coyote" is based on the children’s book of the same name by award-winning Mexican-American author and illustrator Duncan Tonatiuh. An allegorical tale, "Pancho Rabbit and the Coyote" brings to light the hardship and struggles facing families who seek to make better lives for themselves by crossing the border. A young rabbit named Pancho, whose Papá travels north to find work and to earn money for his family, finds himself on a long journey. When Papá does not return as expected, young Pancho sets out on an adventure to find him. Each box is $35 and contains 12 tamales, with flavors including chicken with salsa verde, pork with a hint of chipotle, cheese and jalapeño (not vegetarian), or a variety pack. Every dollar raised stays in San Diego, helping provide nutritious meals, daily check-ins, and connection for vulnerable seniors year-round. When the boss’ nephew arrives on the scene, he and Ju Dou fall for each other with lustful abandon. Their impassioned affair soon leads to a son. After the clandestine couple convinces the despotic husband that he is the father, the boy is raised as his long-awaited heir. However the myriad complications of infidelity lead to a visceral and psychological melee between the lovers and their ruler with explosively dramatic turns. With its stunning mise en scène and sumptuous use of color, "Ju Dou" was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the Academy Awards® and has earned a reputation as one of the greatest Chinese films ever made.
