The 100 Wave Challenge brings surfers and supporters together for a day on the water with one shared goal: raising funds and awareness for Boys to Men Mentoring Network. Participants challenge themselves to catch 100 waves in one day while fundraising to support mentoring programs that provide teenage boys with consistent guidance, connection, and positive male role models. Surfers of all experience levels are welcome to participate. Each surfer creates a personal fundraising page, rallies support from friends, family, and their community, and hits the water on event day to take on the challenge. Not a surfer? They are writers of music as well, and you will find that the inspiration behind their originals comes from these classic eras/genres. Raggedly sophisticated, The Garner’s mysterious sweetness will entrance even the most immovable listener. With Lorelei on Tenor Ukulele, Jon on Gypsy Guitar, and both singing from the deep wells of our booming hearts, our music will transport you back when times were harder, yet the good times, more colorful, vibrant, and bold. She’s a little bit country, he’s a little bit rock ‘n’ roll… well, sort of. Lorelei, vocals and ukulele, is a classically trained vocalist that has fallen in love with swing jazz and Americana. Jon, vocals and guitar, is a certified jazz nerd having fallen in love with Billie Holiday, Lester Young, and Charlie Christian at the age of 16. He also has a soft spot for roots music, especially Sonny Terry and Brownie Mcghee. They decided to make it easier to split the check and got married in October, 2015. Their whole life is music. They gig, teach, compose, and record. They can be found performing their blend of swing classics, gypsy jazz, Americana, and originals all over Southern California. Lace up your running shoes and get ready to hit the boardwalk! Belmont Park’s Dipper Dash 5K presented by Fit returns to Mission Beach on Sunday, September 20, bringing together fitness, family fun, rescue pups and a full day at San Diego’s iconic beachfront amusement park. The morning kicks off at 8 a.m. with the Dipper Dash 5K, a chip-timed race that starts in the heart of Belmont Park before taking runners along the scenic Mission Beach Boardwalk and back to the park. At 9 a.m., the park’s youngest runners can get in on the fun with the Kids Loop, a safe, kid-friendly course held entirely within Belmont Park and designed for children ages 10 and under. And the fun doesn’t stop at the finish line! Every registered participant receives an Unlimited Ride & Play Wristband for all-day access to Belmont Park’s rides and attractions, along with a custom finisher medal, complimentary drink ticket and free event photography. Runners can celebrate afterward at Fit Social’s oceanfront after-party, featuring live DJs, wellness experiences, cold plunges and local vendors. This year’s Dipper Dash will also support The Animal Pad, a San Diego-based nonprofit dedicated to rescuing dogs from high-risk situations and finding them loving homes. The Animal Pad will be onsite with adoptable rescue dogs, giving participants the chance to meet some four-legged friends while learning more about fostering and adoption. From the Prohibition through the Second Big War, the glory days of Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington are being recaptured humbly and with humor in San Diego by four musicians who know it don’t mean a thing without that swing: Beston Barnett - Guitar, Vocals Pete Miesner - Guitar, Lead Vocals Matt Gill - Clarinet Paul Hormick - Upright Bass The Zzymzzy Quartet takes its name from a hypothetical “last word” in the dictionary: thus, their tagline, “The Last Word in Gypsy Swing.” The “Gypsy” sound is heard in much of the guitar work, heavily influenced by the stylings of French Gypsy jazz legend Django Reinhardt, but the group also pays tribute to the Swing Era with classic standards and idiomatic originals. Since the Zzymzzy Quartet came together in 2004, they’ve played dances, parties, weddings, festivals, art openings, and events throughout Southern California to unanimous enthusiasm, carving out a name for themselves as a tasty dance band and a classy addition to every wedding. Starting at the age of 8, he spent ten years studying classical piano performance, music theory, and creative music expression. Raised in New York and Chicago, he returned to New York City in the 80s and spent many years playing music full-time in Manhattan. While living in New York, Wolff studied with several great pianists: Barry Harris (Keeper of the Bebop Flame), Mike Longo (Musical Director for Dizzy Gillespie), and Kenny Werner (Author of Effortless Mastery and a global music legend). He also performed/recorded with many great jazz players including Victor Lewis, Calvin Hill, Rebecca Franks, and others. He was fortunate to record with two of Ahmad Jamal’s drummers: Vernel Fournier and Frank Gant. (Vernel Fournier is credited with developing the iconic drumbeat used in Jamal’s recording of “Poinciana” in the 1950s.) During this time, Wolff also taught music at the Johnny Colon School of Music in East Harlem, as well as playing in clubs, restaurants, cafes, and private engagements throughout the New York City region. In 1987, he was approached by Long Island University in Brooklyn and offered a full music scholarship. He received a degree with honors in 1990. Relocating to San Diego in the 1990s, Adam Wolff performed with different groups, ranging from jazz to popular dance music to creative expression performances. In 2004, he co-founded Blue44, a music collective with a distinctive theme of “ambient grooves”. Wolff’s music contains key elements of excitement and hard-swinging, soulful, creative musical expression. These elements come through in all his performances. She welcomes you to the show, thanks you for coming, and the band rips into its opening chords. As dancers rush to the floor, the smile on Mercedes’ face grows more radiant; you’re in her world and nothing else matters. You might think she was destined to do this, but you’d be wrong. Moore grew up doubting her skills, “I didn’t think that I could sing.” She says. “I didn’t think it was possible.” That was then, this is now. Today, fronting her own band, Mercedes works hard to be more than a voice. She wants fans to feel the music, the way she feels the music. Watching faces in the crowd on this night, as Mercedes swings through an extensive playlist of ballads, blues, and soul shakers, it’s obvious she has them right where she wants them. As a nine-time San Diego Music Award nominee, Moore performs regularly with some of Southern California’s premier musicians. When asked, Moore is straightforward about the multitude of players. “It just makes you a better singer.” She smiles. “And different people have different strengths. Plus, I want to learn, so I can be better.” It appears to be working. Mercedes Moore is currently juggling four major projects and her music can range from blues, gospel, and R&B and swing.
