This course will examine how a poem creates its argument through the emotional and sonic logic of the line. We will not only pay attention to the line as the fundamental unit of meaning in a poem but also engage with how the emotional context created in the line is shifted from line to line, ultimately creating a rhetorical argument for the complex emotional conditions under which a poem occurs. Additionally, classes will examine how elements of the line, such as length, rhythm, and sonic qualities such as assonance and consonance help construct the emotional “sense” of a given unit of meaning, and how that sense is transferred, refigured, and built upon by the same devices. On Thursday, October 19th, Mavericks Beach Club will be hosting their biggest charity event of the year, the SDFD Mustache Madness. Firefighter Aid’s mission is to provide charitable assistance to firefighters and their families in times of need and to promote awareness of firefighter health and safety issues, and the impacts they have upon their families and communities.
