In an era of rising political polarization and identity-driven conflict, how resistant is the United States to the threat of genocidal violence? What lessons can be drawn from societies that have experienced genocide—and how might deep-rooted cultural narratives around honor, rage, and revenge make even established democracies vulnerable? Join the San Diego World Affairs Council (SDWAC) and the SDSU Centers for Human Rights and War and Society for a vital conversation with Professor Alexander Hinton, a leading expert on genocide, cultural violence, and white power movements in the United States. Hinton is a Distinguished Professor of Anthropology, Director of the Center for the Study of Genocide and Human Rights, and UNESCO Chair on Genocide Prevention at Rutgers University. His recent book, "It Can Happen Here: White Power and the Rising Threat of Genocide in the US", explores how seemingly stable societies can spiral into violence. The discussion will be moderated by Grace Cheng, Founding Director of the Center for Human Rights at the College of Arts and Letters at San Diego State University. "Travelogue: Celebrating San Diego's Multiculturalism" featuring: Ashwin Salvi & Lia Steiner Rodriguez +Special Musical Performance by: Rafael Pondé SDWAC has partnered with the International Cottages at Balboa Park's House of Pacific Relations, the United Nations Association of San Diego, the San Diego International Sister Cities Association, and the San Diego Diplomacy Council to create a fun and interactive way to explore the International Cottages and to celebrate San Diego's unique history of multiculturalism! How does travel shape our world perspectives? This unique program will take you on a visual tour around the world with special guest speakers Ashwin Salvi and Lia Steiner Rodriguez, who will inspire us with stories of their own travel and adventures. Upon checking in for the presentations, all pre-registered lecture attendees will receive a program "passport" upon arrival. Immediately following the presentations, attendees will be invited to visit the participating Cottages to learn more about each country and will receive a "passport stamp" in their program. Explore mindfulness-based writing using fun prompts to collectively inspire and deepen your intuitive expression. Participants in this one-session creative writing workshop will be inspired by a series of short, in-class prompts with a poem and pictures. The aim is to boost creativity and deepen each participant’s intuitive expression through contemplative practices. We will start this workshop with a brief mindfulness settling-in exercise—and a poem to accompany the session’s theme. And after each writing prompt, participants will be encouraged to discuss their work in small groups. This intuitive creation process is highly motivating; it enhances self-awareness and the flow of ideas and connection with others. As a creative writing teacher and published author since 2007, and a trained mindfulness teacher since 2017, I enjoy fostering unique and brave spaces for participants to gather from all backgrounds and walks of life. This course is designed for every type of writer: novelists, poets, screenwriters, playwrights, journalists, essayists, etc., with all levels of experience: from novice writers to seasoned authors. These vignettes stand alone yet bleed into one another. Meet the band The Shits, their groupies The Clits, and an array of colorful characters who populate these streets, squats and punk shows. With them, we cop drugs, shoot up, dumpster dive, trip around The City, go to punk shows and slip between the cracks of society. Most of the stories are true, although some of the details may or may not have happened... Ruby wrote "Bag of Tricks" after reconnecting with old punk friends and reminiscing about those lost years. Most of what she wrote came from events that really occurred, though Ruby took liberties and changed some details, because she could.

Knowing how to establish mood is essential to good writing. Hook readers early through the expression of believable feelings and a well-established mood. The best tools to create mood and atmosphere are simple literary elements. We will explore them in this three-hour workshop and write from prompts to try them out and build new stories. Please be advised that it is best to register at least a week before the start of a class to help our instructors prepare and ensure that it does not get canceled or rescheduled. Cinema in these years provided an outlet for humanity’s intertwined anxieties, fears, and fantasies about the brave new frontiers looming ahead.
