Art Scene West Gallery, in Solana Beach, announces an exciting event open to the public, the Black Friday “Performance Art” Weekend Event & Holiday Art Show Opening. The Black Friday Weekend Event will feature a live performance art show on Black Friday, 11/25/22, 12 noon - 4 p.m. (only!) by internationally renowned artist Hugo Rivera. Hugo will create one of his large-scale paintings from start to finish in a mesmerizing outdoor creative performance of four hours or less. This artist knows how to creatively sling paint! There will be live music and refreshments on Black Friday and refreshments as well during the rest of the weekend event. Canvases painted by Hugo will be exhibited in our courtyard as well as canvases painted by Esau Andrade, Mexican surrealist. Hugo Rivera is an internationally renowned Mexican American contemporary figurative artist, born and raised in Guadalajara, who came to California to pursue his career. Formally educated as a civil engineer in Mexico, Hugo began painting murals anywhere he could in his spare time as a college student. He painted his first big mural on his bedroom wall, an impression of the cover of Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” album, which was the start of his passion to paint on big surfaces. In the U.S., Hugo began painting murals in the Huntington Beach area for private clients in their homes, restaurants, and churches. In 2000, Hugo opened his own gallery in Laguna Beach, where he now lives with his wife and son. Hugo’s work has won awards at nationally prestigious juried fairs, including the Indian Wells Art Festival, the Malibu Art Festival, the La Jolla Festival of Arts, the Beverly Hills Art Festival, and the Sawdust Art Festival, and he has been honored with a permanent exhibition of his artworks at Museum Vladimir Cora in Nayarit, Mexico. Hugo’s large-scale paintings are now in private and corporate collections worldwide. Hugo has developed a reputation as a performance artist over the years because he works very rapidly with his brushwork and can easily create a large scale figurative painting within four hours or even less, from start to finish. Esau Andrade is a prominent Mexican contemporary surrealist painter. Born in 1963 in Tepic Nayarit, Mexico, Andrade started drawing at the age of three and his passion for art eventually led him to attend La Escuela de Artes Plasticas de la Universidad de Guadalajara. Strongly influenced by two of the giants of Mexican fine art, Diego Rivera and Rufino Tamayo, Andrade developed his own creative style, and his soul is reflected in his symbolic paintings reflecting his childhood, his dreams, and the cheerful universe that characterizes Mexican culture. The La Jolla Art Association will present "Celebrate the Old Year, Welcome to the New Year," as an exhibit that will run from Saturday, Dec. 3 through Friday, Feb. 3, 2023 at the LJCC. The type of art represented includes: oil, acrylic, pen and ink, drawings, pastels, and 2-D artwork, including photography and collage. Leonard Patton is one of the premier jazz vocalists in Southern California and has recorded and performed with some of the top musicians including Antonio Sanchez, Lionel Loueke, Peter Sprague and recently Pat Metheny. Mr. Patton is also the proprietor of the Jazz Lounge in San Diego. Ed Kornhauser is San Diego's jazz piano workhorse performing with all the top musicians in town and one of the most in demand pianists on the West Coast. The Museum of Photographic Arts (MOPA) is hosting its 13th annual Human Rights Watch Film Festival from February 2 to 9. The Human Rights Watch Film Festival will feature critically acclaimed films on topics including child care and education, environmental protection, gender equity, trans and Indigenous rights, women’s rights and more. On February 9, MOPA and Human Rights Watch will feature a special Q&A with the filmmakers behind "Uýra" (2022) About the film: Uýra, a transgender Indigenous artist, travels through the Amazon on a journey of self-discovery using performance art to teach Indigenous youth that they are the guardians of ancestral messages of the Amazon Forest. In a country that kills an incredibly high number of transgender, Indigenous and environmentalist youth of any country , Uýra leads a rising movement while fostering unity and providing inspiration for the LGBTQIA+ and environmental movements in the heart of the Amazon Forest. This event will feature director Juliana Curi, producer Martina Sönksen and special guests. For over 60 years, Dr. Seuss’ illustrations have brought a visual realization to his fantastic and imaginary worlds. His artistic talent went far beyond the printed page and yet, to this day, his Secret Art Collection is virtually unknown to the general public. Throughout his lifetime, Theodor Seuss Geisel (aka Dr. Seuss) created paintings and sculpture, which he secreted away at the Dr. Seuss Estate. Exclusive Collections will share a compelling selection of artworks from "The Art of Dr. Seuss Collection" at the 212 S. Cedros Ave. #104, Solana Beach, California, Nov. 26 – Dec. 24. Hours are Monday - Saturday from 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. - 5 p.m. Visitors may explore and acquire works from Dr. Seuss’s best-known children’s books, as well as "The Secret Art of Dr. Seuss," a mind-expanding collection based on decades of artwork, which Dr. Seuss created at night for his own personal pleasure. Perhaps the wackiest and most wonderful elements of the collection are Dr. Seuss’s three-dimensional “Unorthodox Taxidermy” sculptures with names such as Carbonic Walrus, Two-Horned Drouberhannis, and Goo-Goo-Eyed Tasmanian Wolghast, to name a few. Additionally, Ted’s cat was never far from his artist thoughts. He drew himself as The Cat Behind the Hat, his cat was the protagonist in several of his Secret Art paintings and, as a fun aside, many of his early advertisements and cartoons had a “cat bystander” witnessing all the action. They hinted at his adventures across the world, his reclusive sensibility despite his fame, and his penchant for the childlike fantasy and humor, which infused nearly every facet of his life. Despite the unprecedented demand during his lifetime, no limited edition artworks were ever conceived, authorized, or created until this historic project began in 1997, six years after Geisel’s death. That year, this exclusive project put into motion a series of artworks and exhibitions, which firmly established him as one of the most iconic artistic talents of the 20th century. Each of these Estate-Authorized limited editions has been adapted and reproduced from Theodor Seuss Geisel’s original drawings, paintings, or sculptures. Additionally, each work bears a posthumously printed or engraved Dr. Seuss signature, identifying the work as an authorized limited edition commissioned by the Dr. Seuss Estate.
