"Stars, Cars and Guitars" is a “blast from the past” exhibit showing how, in less than a decade, from the years from 1958 to 1965, surfing related elements came to dominate popular culture forming a lasting effect on California, America and the world at large. From iconic record albums, period surfboards, fashion artifacts, seminal photographic images and memorabilia, visitors get a clearer sense of why this era is considered the “golden age” of surfing and the surfing lifestyle. In just a few short years an entirely new social structure was formed with its own vernacular, mode of dress, art, musical sound, modes of transportation, hair styles, and rituals all its own. Highlighting a wide range of global traditions, the objects in Cups to Connections tell the stories of heritage and craft from across time and cultures. Hospitality is the bridge that forges connections – each custom unique, yet the act of inviting others to join for a beverage, a universal language. This exhibition is presented in collaboration with The House of Pacific Relations, a consortium of houses located in Balboa Park representing 31 cultures – bringing various cultural groups together to foster and cultivate a spirit of understanding, tolerance, and goodwill. From thematic baking and fun activities to engaging projects, our camps provide an immersive experience for children. Every week has a different baking theme and every Friday is Pizza Baking day followed with the movie and popcorn in the afternoon. Kids get to play every day in our fun indoor playground. Devoted to partnering with Native communities through the arts, MCASD is partnering with the Barona Cultural Center & Museum and Barona Indian Charter School to present a unique showcase featuring artwork created by 8th-grade students. The exhibit called Muuyaawkeh! (You Should Know!) is the name of the student-led exhibit and is an attempt at educating a wider audience off the reservation with a goal to show MCASD visitors the importance of protecting the pollinators and their Native habitat/plants.
