Join us in crafting your own woven stool! In this 2-day intensive series, taught by Erin Behling, each student will create their own stool from beech wood while learning the basics of woodworking, furniture design and traditional weaving techniques using Danish cord. While getting familiar with the tools in the woodshop during this course, students will learn mortise and tenon joinery basics, cutting joinery, shaping and finishing wood, how to cut tapered legs on the tablesaw, and of course– how to weave that beautiful seat with Danish cord! Methods we use in this class are different from our other woodworking classes, so this series will give you even more knowledge! June 29 & 30 from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. with a 1.5-hr break and 2:30 – 6:30 p.m. Optional: Upgrade to Walnut wood for stool legs for an additional $25. All rails will be made from Beech. Learn to weave on a Tapestry Loom! Have you always been intrigued by beautiful handwoven textiles, wanted to understand how they were made, and maybe learn this ancient craft? Then this is a class for you. In this 3-day workshop (over three weeks), you will be introduced to the age-old practice of weaving and discover the rewarding aspect of creating objects for useful or decorative purpose. Weaving can also be a meditative parenthesis in our fast-paced world. You will learn the basic weaving techniques needed to set you on your weaver’s journey such as: - How to warp a tapestry loom - Plain tapestry weave (single and double weft tapestry) - Weft interlock and slit weave - Weft-faced color blending - Turkish knots (if we have sufficient time).We will weave a sampler and a final project representing different learned techniques. Students will work on a vertical tapestry loom which can be taken home each week to practice and work on the project assigned. A variety of yarn will be available. Students are welcome to bring their own yarn, as well as a heavy metal fork to use as beater to pack the weft threads down. A security deposit of $50 will be required at the beginning of the class for the loan of the loom during the duration of the class.
