It is Teach Music Week put on by Keep Music Alive and to help celebrate, we invite you and your family to join us for our popular free Traveling Ukulele Zoo! This exciting, hands-on musical experience is for children of all ages. It will be presented at Civita Park in the green space above the play structures with plenty of free parking. Bring your blanket and gather round to learn about, see, touch, strum, and hear the sounds of a dozen different kinds of ukuleles and similar stringed folk instruments. You'll enjoy a tall tale told by Guitars and Ukes in the Classroom’s (GITC) own tuning archangel, "Uncle Rodney" Howard, explore qualities that are special about each ukulele, and notice what the instruments have in common. Many children who have attended the "Ukulele Zoo" have discovered an instrument they like the most! This event will be facilitated by GITC founder, Jess Baron and "Uncle Rodney," with assistance from additional GITC teachers. It promises to spark inspiration for the child in all of us! Mainly Mozart and Tijuana community-based organization Promotora De Las Bellas Artes have partnered for a bi-national project to raise awareness for ocean conservation and the care and importance of our shared Cali-Baja Coast. Part of this program is a free community concert, “The Sea Unites Us,” May 5 at 5 p.m. at the UC San Diego Epstein Family Amphitheater. The Mainly Mozart Youth Orchestra will be joined by members of Tijuana’s Promotora de las Bellas Artes Children’s Choir, the San Diego Children’s Choir, and the SDSU Chamber Choir, as well as musicians and singers from the Baja California and Los Angeles regions performing works highlighting the importance of the shared Cali-Baja coast. Led by Maestro Hernan Constantino, the concert will feature new music from renowned Mexico City singer, conductor and composer Jorge Cózatl whose piece was inspired by research provided by the Walter Munk Foundation for the Oceans (WMFO) as well as the environmental learning and experiences of the students of Promotora de las Bellas Artes choir. Each week a different step is taught. Within this 4-week course, students learn how to create functional pottery pieces while exploring their creativity! Illume/Warwicks: In Conversation with Colum McCann The USD College of Arts and Sciences and Humanities Center, along with Warwick’s bookstore, will host National Book Award-winning author Colum McCann, as he discusses his first major non-fiction book, "American Mother." American Mother takes us deep into the story of Diane Foley, whose son Jim, a freelance journalist, was held captive by ISIS before being beheaded in the Syrian desert-the video shared online for all the world to see. In American Mother; Diane’s voice is channeled into searing reality by National Book Award winning author Colum McCann, who brings us on a journey of strength, resilience, and radical empathy. McCann will be in conversation with Avi Spiegel, PhD, JD, associate professor of political science and international relations. Colum McCann has received some of the world's most prestigious literary awards and honors, including the U.S National Book Award, the International Dublin Literary Prize, a Chevalier des Arts et Lettres from the French government, election to the Irish arts academy, several European awards, the 2010 Best Foreign Novel Award in China, and an Oscar nomination. His novels TransAtlantic (2013) and Apeirogon (2020) were longlisted for the Man Booker Prize. In 2017 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts.
