Come chat with artist Lewis deSoto about Conquest, now installed at the San Diego Automotive Museum. With his automotive-based sculpture Conquest (2004), artist Lewis deSoto examines the relationship between his Cahuilla background and his distant ancestor (conquistador Hernando de Soto) within the context of the automotive industry, which in its branding appropriates terms, imagery, and aesthetics related to the brutal conquest of the Americas. Conquest subtly interrogates the mythologies and identities of Southern California through the lens of midcentury capitalism. Per Mr. deSoto, "Conquest is a project to trace the ironic threads of DeSoto: automobile, conquistador, myself and our culture. It proposes that the metaphor of history is a set of divergent parallel universes in which to traverse and communicate with." Celebrate the legacy of long-time San Diego resident Robert Irwin, who created innovative site-specific artworks that explore the effects of light through interventions in space and architecture. Taking inspiration from Irwin's use of light, we will play with its natural and artificial sources by casting shadows in a shadow puppet theater and learning the differences between translucent, transparent, and opaque objects. Art activity: Inspired by the radiant glass sculpture Spanish Fan (1995), on view in MCASD’s Sculpture Garden, create a faux-stained glass rainbow with colored cellophane paper and hang them on your favorite window in Prebys Learning Center. Drawing is Seeing An unusual shaped tree, a turn in the creek, a mountain view can wake us up on a trail. Once we have taken a photograph, within minutes, we are back on cruise control, thinking about the rest of the day, or the lunch we packed. The view is lost. The feeling of connection to the tree is lost. The patterns we saw in the creek are gone. What did we really see? How do we reconnect to our attention? Drawing, connecting your hand in motion to your eye and brain, is a way to keep attention. When we do this, we wake up to the world of detail, delight and complexity that is always there if we chose to see it. Drawing is a skill, like reading, that can be learned. This 3 hour class intends to teach you the skills to draw what you see in nature. The purpose of the class is not to create art, but to give you tools to see more clearly and to remember in more detail the world that is around you, a world that is always ready for your attention and curiosity.
