  • "The Witness is a Whale" reveals one of the greatest environmental crimes of the 20th Century - the secret and illegal slaughter of hundreds of thousands of whales by the Soviet Union and Japan during the Cold War. Through never-before-seen archival footage, hidden documents, and personal records kept by Soviet scientists, "The Witness Is a Whale" exposes this ruthless killing for the first time on film. Our documentary also recounts the post-whaling recovery of many different whale species and highlights their overall importance to the health of our oceans. The screening will be followed by a Q&A with local filmmakers Cheryl & Nick Dean, and the writer & editor Mark Fletcher. For more information visit: sdufex.com

  • Ever since the 2003 release of her groundbreaking debut, Another Mind, pianist Hiromi has astonished audiences with a creative energy that eclipses the boundaries of jazz, classical, and pop, taking improvisation and composition to new heights of complexity and sophistication. Taking the stage as part of the electrified four-piece ensemble sonicwonder, Hiromi builds on the spark of collaboration to create something magnificent. Born in Hamamatsu, Japan in 1979, Hiromi’s was first exposed to jazz by first piano teacher, Noriko Hikida, who introduced her to the great pianists Erroll Garner and Oscar Peterson. She enrolled in the Yamaha School of Music and started writing music. Hiromi moved to the United States in 1999 and studied at the Berklee College of Music. Among her mentors was jazz bassist/arranger Richard Evans, who took Hiromi’s demo to his friend, the legendary pianist Ahmad Jamal; they co-produced Hiromi’s first album, Another Mind. The album was a critical success in North America and Japan, where it shipped gold and received the Recording Industry Association of Japan’s Jazz Album of the Year Award. In 2009, Hiromi recorded with pianist Chick Corea on Duet, a live recording of their concert in Tokyo. She also appeared on bassist Stanley Clarke’s GRAMMY-winning release, Jazz in the Garden. In the summer of 2021, she performed at the opening ceremonies of the Tokyo Olympics. Sonicwonder features Adam O’Farrill on trumpet, Hadrien Feraud on bass, and Gene Coye on drums. • Joseph Bellows Gallery is pleased to announce its upcoming exhibition, "Sage Sohier: Passing Time". This solo exhibition will feature a remarkable selection of black and white photographs from Sohier’s recently published Nazraeli Press monograph of the same title. The show will run from February 17 - April 27, with a reception and book signing with the artist from 5-7 p.m., on Saturday the 17 of February. This will be the artist’s second solo exhibition at the gallery. The images that comprise the exhibition are drawn from the photographer’s compelling and kindhearted portraits made between 1979-85 of people living in working class and ethnic neighborhoods in her hometown, as well as in the towns she visited each summer during her annual road trips through the eastern and southern regions of the country. The exhibition will showcase both a selection of vintage gelatin silver prints, as well as 16 x 20 inch modern gelatin silver prints, which are the result of the photographer revisiting her archive of negatives and contact sheets from the early 1980s where she discovered a trove of captivating images that had never been printed. Of the work, Sohier observes, “I noticed a kind of relaxed sensuality in many of the pictures. A kind of theater of the streets emerged”. Sage Sohier has been photographing people in their environments for more than 30 years, and has been awarded fellowships from the No Strings Foundation, the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Massachusetts Artists Foundation in recognition of her work.
