Kumiko is an ancient Japanese woodworking technique of assembling individual pieces of wood, without the use of nails, into geometric patterns. Kumiko has been used in constructing shoji screens, latticework, and other decorative elements in traditional Japanese architecture. In this workshop, students will learn the basics of kumiko, including the use of hand tools to cut the pieces and assemble the frame. Each student will work on a small project to finish and take home. Materials are provided. We recommend students bring their own eye protection, ear protection & apron. No experience necessary. This lecture develops a theory of ‘postcapitalist aesthetics’, specifically within the context of rural landscapes. The theory brings a relational and pluralistic environmental aesthetics into conversation with various concepts, ‘postpastoral’, ‘socionatures’, and ‘commoning’, before exploring how some art practices may support human-ecological relationships of care and resistance. Emily Brady is Professor of Philosophy at Texas A&M University. Her research expertise extends to aesthetics and philosophy of art, environmental philosophy and eighteenth-century philosophy. Her most recent book is Between Nature and Culture: The Aesthetics of Modified Environments (2018, with Isis Brook and Jonathan Prior). Cosponsored by the Values Institute and the Humanities Center. As part of the Humanities Center’s series on The Frozen Realms, the Humanities Center presents a weeklong showing of Braden King and Laura Moya’s remarkable film about the most westerly point in the United States: "Dutch Harbor", in the Aleutian Islands of Alaska. This engaging film festival runs in-person from January 1 through February 11, 2024, and continues virtually from Feb. 11-18. The SDIJFF showcases a selection of the best contemporary Jewish films. Thirty-four feature films and 28 short films will be screened and there will be plenty of free in-person-only screenings at the David & Dorothea Garfield Theatre at the Lawrence Family Jewish Community Center in UTC. Film enthusiasts can attend in-person screenings at the David & Dorothea Garfield Theatre, while virtual film screenings are available on demand beginning on Feb. 11 and will remain available through Feb 18. Limited, free in-person screenings will also be available. This festival is known to be one of the most prestigious Jewish film festivals in the country. In the blockbuster "Barbie" movie, two Latina women save the day, Gloria (played by America Ferrera) and Sasha (played by Ariana Greenblatt), and stand in for Latinas and Latinidad. But in 2000, "Dora the Explorer" was considered by many to be pathbreaking: for the first time, a Latina girl was a main character on Nickelodeon. Notably, this year was also the first time that the U.S. Census revealed that the Latine population was the most numerous minority in the country. Valdivia’s talk will consider how this evolution brought the girl culture of Latinas and Latindad and to the center of representation and profit in U.S. popular culture.
