From San Diego weekend arts preview (KPBS feature): Minerva Cuevas' new exhibition at ICA North is literally coated in oil. The next artist in residence at the Encinitas branch of the new Institute of Contemporary Art San Diego is the Mexico City-based interdisciplinary, conceptual artist. There are three distinct parts to this exhibition: one is a gigantic mural, with red paint and black oil, with an easy-to-imagine fantasy world where the oil has taken over the natural world. Another is sculptural displays of vintage oil and petroleum-based products and advertisements, sprouting with plastic flowers. The third, my favorites of the exhibition, are landscape paintings — think serene ocean waves gently lapping against a rocky coastline. Cuevas dips the edge of each canvas in a viscous tar used for asphalt and roads ("chapopote" in Spanish). The tar adheres but oozes thickly off the canvas, ultimately drying into a sculptural element that's equal parts ominous symbolism and grotesque, ink-black stalactites. — Julia Dixon Evans, KPBS Exhibition details: Cuevas' work will be on view at ICA North from Saturday, Feb. 19 through May 1, 2022. Artist Sofie Ramos encloses everyday objects — laundry, recycling, shoes, furniture — with brightly colored latex paint into assemblages. The works are installations, sculptural against a gallery backdrop also transformed by vivid color in geometric shapes or whimsical patterns. UC San Diego Music welcomes sound artist, researcher and composer Stefan Maier to the Conrad Prebys Music Center, Experimental Theater for a collaborative evening length work with faculty member Michelle Lou. The duo will present a structured improvisation on hardware and software electronics and spatialized audio.

MCASD’s focus on female artists continues in March 2023 with the first museum exhibition of San Diego and Tijuana-based artist Griselda Rosas. "Griselda Rosas: Yo te cuido" is the artist’s first solo museum exhibition, presenting new textile drawings and sculptural installations that explore themes of inheritance and intergenerational knowledge. Rosas, who is based between San Diego and Tijuana, adopts embroidery skills learned from her mother, grandmother, and aunts, often using her young son’s drawings as foundations on which to layer, stitch, and build. Incorporating natural pigments and collage, Rosas combines these inventive images with colonial imagery to evoke a collision and circulation of cultures. Reserve your ticket today through here.
