  • From The Book Catapult: The Book Catapult is pleased to welcome back GennaRose Nethercott for her debut novel, Thistlefoot on Sunday, January 8 at 5:00 p.m.. Like her previous event at TBC in 2019, the event will feature an intricate shadow-puppetry crankie box which animates segments of the text through scrolling, panoramic hand-cut paper images! In the tradition of modern fairy tales like Neil Gaiman's American Gods and Naomi Novik's Spinning Silver comes a sweeping epic rich in Eastern European folklore - a debut novel about the ancestral hauntings that stalk us, and the uncanny power of story. The Yaga siblings - Bellatine, a young woodworker, and Isaac, a wayfaring street performer and con artist - have been estranged since childhood, separated both by resentment and by wide miles of American highway. But when they learn that they are to receive a mysterious inheritance, the siblings are reunited - only to discover that their bequest isn’t land or money, but something far stranger: a sentient house on chicken legs. Thistlefoot, as the house is called, has arrived from the Yagas’ ancestral home in Russia - but not alone. A sinister figure known only as the Longshadow Man has tracked it to American shores, bearing with him violent secrets from the past: fiery memories that have hidden in Isaac and Bellatine’s blood for generations. As the Yaga siblings embark with Thistlefoot on a final cross-country tour of their family’s traveling theater show, the Longshadow Man follows in relentless pursuit, seeding destruction in his wake. Ultimately, time, magic, and legacy must collide - erupting in a powerful conflagration to determine who gets to remember the past and craft a new future. An enchanted adventure illuminated by Jewish myth and adorned with lyrical prose as tantalizing and sweet as briar berries, Thistlefoot is an immersive modern fantasy saga by a bold new talent. GennaRose Nethercott is a writer and folklorist. Her first book, The Lumberjack’s Dove, was selected by Louise Glück as a winner of the National Poetry Series, and whether authoring novels, poems, ballads, or even fold-up paper cootie catchers, her projects are all rooted in myth—and what our stories reveal about who we are. She tours nationally and internationally performing strange tales (sometimes with puppets in tow) and composing poems-to-order for strangers on an antique typewriter with her team, the Traveling Poetry Emporium. She lives in the woodlands of Vermont, beside an old cemetery. Thistlefoot is her debut novel. (Seen here, GennaRose and her "crankie box" for Thistlefoot.) • From the museum: Oceanside Museum of Art celebrates the storied career of the Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist, Don Bartletti with an exhibition featuring photography captured throughout his over 40-year career. Don Bartletti: Elusive Moments-Enduring Stories will open January 22 and run through May 1. From the artist: “My approach to photojournalism lies somewhere between cultural anthropology and a scavenger hunt. Before I step out of the newsroom or my front door, I’ve already spent minutes, hours, days, weeks, or sometimes years of research on a subject. I’m focusing long before I pick up the camera. Planning can be as simple as reading a weather report or as complicated as understanding causes and consequences of international migration. Even if I know when the sun will set in Carlsbad or where emigrants will cross the U.S./Mexico border, the essential story-telling moment is inevitably hiding in plain sight. That’s where the “scavenger hunt” comes in—but it’s not a game. It’s a purposeful search for emotions, personalities, circumstances, and moments that will beg the viewer to critically question or simply appreciate what they see in the picture." — Don Bartletti (read more via OMA) Related links: Oceanside Museum of Art on Instagram Oceanside Museum of Art on Facebook

  • Join us in a celebration for a cause, bringing light and resources to suicide awareness and mental health with an interactive music and art experience. This inaugural event is inspired and dedicated to singer/songwriter Kiela Gwin, who died of suicide at the age of 27 in 2019. During this unique and uplifting event, we will come together to hear Kiela's beautiful music, interactively paint a mural that honors all loved ones lost to suicide, and raise money for the incredible work of local nonprofit, Survivors of Suicide Loss (SOSL). There will also be a silent auction, DJ and hors d'oeuvres. All proceeds from this event will go directly to SOSL. In bringing this fundraiser to life, we are hoping to shine a light on the issues surrounding suicide and give people an avenue to come out of the shadows and celebrate the lives of those lost together, making this a topic of discussion for everyone to have –not just those directly affected. Date | Thursday, February 24 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Location | FruitCraft Fermentery & Distillery Get tickets here! General admission: $40 VIP admission: $100 Premium + Art admission: $75 Donations are highly appreciated.
