Crying on the Blue Line Trolley features @andrs.herndz ‘s first departure from illustration. It consists of analogue photography that takes from and recontextualizes the visual makeup of San Diego and Tijuana into a series of hybrid landscapes. Andrés Hernández is a self-taught non-binary Mexican artist living in Tijuana. She quietly writes and makes art about her life. She is a firm believer that soft-spoken art also deserves to be heard. Artists Brody Albert and Nathaniel Klein will open a new exhibition, "A, B, C, D" at Best Practice on July 9, with a reception from 5-8 p.m. Albert is based in Los Angeles; Klein is based in San Diego and Denver. They use object-based sculpture, assemblage, multimedia, performance and installation work. More information from the gallery: Brody Albert’s meticulously produced sculptures translate pedestrian objects to platonic ideals. For this exhibition, Brody took two objects (scare-owls and cardboard boxes), reproduced them in shifting scales and hues, and arranged them to make a series of visual koans. Nathaniel Klein’s video work eschews editing in favor of choreographed movements in and between frames. For this exhibition, Nathaniel made five videos composed of objects collected from 99¢ stores, sorted by color, and arranged into interrelated, evolving still lifes. Brody is an artist and educator based in Los Angeles, California. Nathaniel is an artist and educator recently relocated to Denver, Colorado. Working collaboratively as OH since 2014, Brody and Nathaniel design and publish small-run Risograph and screen-printed publications, and occasionally curate. Doug McMinimy converts the dance from a sequence of movements in space and time into a series of still photographs. These dance images have been selected and organized in this gallery as a re-membering of the dance in the form of a photographic art installation. Lost is the dimension and quality of movement. Instead, the fleeting gesture is suspended in time, allowing us the opportunity to contemplate the dancer’s fleeting gesture. A wide-angle lens was primarily used for these images, allowing the photographer to work in close proximity to the dancer and the viewer to become immersed in the experience of dance. About the artist: Douglas McMinimy is a San Diego-based photographer who works exclusively with dancers. He began to dance in his late teens and co-founded modern dance group 456 Speed-Up in 1980. By the 2000s, his connections with dance had waned. He began carrying a camera, photographing the New England flora on daily dog walks on Mount Desert Island, Maine. Photography facilitated his prodigal return to dance in 2017. Having relocated to San Diego with its thriving dance community, he became determined to focus his creative efforts on photographing dance, particularly in a studio setting, which enables a relationship of collaboration between McMinimy and the dancers he photographs.
