Ceres Madoo is a Los Angeles based mixed media artist, who describes herself as a mix of a mix. West Indian, American, Black, Indian, Jewish and Mormon, like her art work, Ceres’ personal identity defies categorization. With a BA from UC San Diego ('89) and an MFA from Rutgers University, her conceptual, fluxus, critical educational roots happily collide with her inherent interests in non-western art, folk and craft methodologies. Ceres teaches and works in all mediums. This year, her primary focus has been in working in ceramics and painting with a re-imagination of what it means to be a human creature. “If this is any indication of what Old Crow Medicine Show still has in store so many recordings in its career, we should count ourselves lucky.” – NPR Music Old Crow Medicine Show got their start busking on street corners in 1998, from New York state and up through Canada, winning audiences along the way with their boundless energy and spirit. They eventually found themselves in Boone, North Carolina where they caught the attention of folk icon Doc Watson while playing in front of a pharmacy. He invited the band to play at his festival, MerleFest, and the rest is history. It’s been over twenty years since these humble beginnings. The band has gone on to receive the honor of being inducted as members of the Grand Ole Opry and have won two Grammy Awards: “Best Folk Album” for "Remedy" (2014) and “Best Long Form Music Video” for "Big Easy Express" (2013). Additionally, their classic single, “Wagon Wheel”, received the RIAA’s Double-Platinum certification in 2019 for selling over 2,000,000 copies while the band’s debut album "O.C.M.S." has been certified Gold (500,000 copies). Join us at WNDR Museum on Wednesday, October 25th, as Jason Mayden, artist, author, and designer, launches a digital version of his art exhibition, Boys Break Too. Featuring seven original pieces, digital collectibles and commemorative merchandise exploring intergenerational trauma and the emotional suppression that Black male masculinity faces as a means of survival, this intimate presentation will spark constructive conversations that promote collective healing and raise awareness about mental health resources. Mayden’s appearance coincides with International Artists Day at WNDR Museum San Diego with free admission from 11a.m. to 9 p.m., celebrating the artist in all of us.
