Brought together to showcase their explorations in portraiture and reflective consciousness, the Hyde Art Gallery’s second exhibition of the Fall 2022 semester, The Living Hand, presents the works of two San Diego artists in conversation. Vicki Walsh’s paintings and Gail Schneider’s sculptures establish a repertoire of provocative, sensuously surfaced forms and character narratives to investigate the human body as visual language and to explore the mysticism surrounding identity. Modeled and rendered through a historical lens of antiquity and classical treatment of media, both artists are drawing upon fundamentalist ideals of portraiture, spanning global traditions, to address important structures of modern society utilizing surrealist, often enigmatic figures. "The Living Hand" will be on view at the Hyde Art Gallery from October 10 until November 10, 2022 at Grossmont College’s Hyde Art Gallery and an artist reception will be hosted by the gallery on October 18th from 5 - 7pm. The gallery’s daily walk-in hours are Monday through Thursday from 10:00am to 4:00pm and closed Friday through Sunday and legal holidays. 'Rubies' In 1967, the great Russian-born choreographer, George Balanchine, created his world famous ballet Jewels for the New York City Ballet. The three act ballets all have a different composer and motif. Rubies, with music by Igor Stravinsky, is the second act of the ballet and truly captures the sexy energy and athleticism of our country. The ballet is packed with adventure, fun and playfulness, and the dazzling bejeweled costumes will take your breath away. 'Divertimento' from 'Le Baiser De La Fée' Divertimento from Le Baiser De La Fée (the Fairy’s Kiss) was created for the New York City Ballet for the 1972 Stravinsky Festival. The New York Times dance critic has described the ballet as one of George Balanchine’s greatest and most unusual works. The choreography is deeply poetic and has always moved audiences by its light and shade, creating an experience you will never forget. 'Ash' With accelerated tempi to the exciting music by Michael Torke, Peter Martins, former artistic director of New York City Ballet, launches 10 dancers on a non-stop series of thrilling solos, duets, and ensemble dances that leaves audiences amazed and thrilled. The Brick Bar is a Lego inspired bar consisting of over a million blocks, transported and assembled into the ultimate fun fest. You will be encouraged to relive your childhood at this amazingly creative pop-up themed bar. Coming to Emjaye Inspired on Pomerado Road on April 8 and 9. The bar will feature sculptures made completely from bricks as well as an abundance of blocks for people to shape into their own creations. There will also be local DJs spinning tunes all day to keep the vibes and creative juices flowing. The 90 minute sessions will involve building competitions complete with prizes, a brick-made wishing well and a table built with over 22,000 bricks to host plenty of table tennis relays! There is also plenty of delicious food options available for pre-order including chilli fries, mac n cheese and loaded gyros.
