Brought together to showcase their explorations in portraiture and reflective consciousness, the Hyde Art Gallery’s second exhibition of the Fall 2022 semester, The Living Hand, presents the works of two San Diego artists in conversation. Vicki Walsh’s paintings and Gail Schneider’s sculptures establish a repertoire of provocative, sensuously surfaced forms and character narratives to investigate the human body as visual language and to explore the mysticism surrounding identity. Modeled and rendered through a historical lens of antiquity and classical treatment of media, both artists are drawing upon fundamentalist ideals of portraiture, spanning global traditions, to address important structures of modern society utilizing surrealist, often enigmatic figures. "The Living Hand" will be on view at the Hyde Art Gallery from October 10 until November 10, 2022 at Grossmont College’s Hyde Art Gallery and an artist reception will be hosted by the gallery on October 18th from 5 - 7pm. The gallery’s daily walk-in hours are Monday through Thursday from 10:00am to 4:00pm and closed Friday through Sunday and legal holidays. Ashton Gallery at Art on 30th will partner with the San Diego Visual Arts community to host a charitable art show and exhibition to provide aid to Ukraine. The event will feature 60 plus large and mid-sized original works of art by local artists, all created in the theme or colors of Ukraine’s national flag, flower or landmarks. Artists participating in the show will choose to contribute 30% or more of their proceeds. In addition, the Gallery’s fifteen associated professional artists will donate a collection of 200 miniature works of art all affordably priced at 45 dollars. One hundred percent of the Sunflower Collection proceeds raised will be donated to The Red Cross. The opening reception will be held Saturday, April 23 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Ashton Gallery the exhibit will be available for the public to enjoy Monday to Saturday through Friday, June 3. Plant lovers rejoice! With the rise in popularity of house plants, this San Diego Botanic Garden (SDBG) exhibition shows off one of the most popular plants, the bromeliad. "World of Bromeliads" is staged throughout SDBG's lush, 37-acre campus, featuring displays in the state-of-the-art, 8,000 square foot, glass-enclosed Dickinson Family Education Conservatory (DFEC) that opened last year as a $6.5 million tropical addition to the urban oasis. Aug. 14 - Sept. 26, 2021 Wednesday - Sunday from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. "I love bromeliads because of their diversity, in fact there are 3,590 known species of bromeliads, almost all native to the Americas," said SDBG President and CEO, Ari Novy, PhD. "They include the tiny but mighty Spanish moss, towering beauties such as sapphire tower, gorgeous houseplants and delicious pineapple. Bromeliads exemplify how plants evolve to achieve success, while simultaneously delighting all of our senses."The main, must-see features of the "World of Bromeliads" include interactive displays, such as a station where visitors use microscopes to see the biodiversity of organisms living in bromeliad water tanks. On weekends, visitors can shop for unusual and unique plants at our grower direct market and learn how to care for their purchase. Entrance to "World of Bromeliads" is included with the price of admission. Members receive free admission. Non-member admissions range from $10 to $18. From the organizers: Celebrating ballet masterworks from the 20th century by the father of American ballet, George Balanchine, and the famed New York City Ballet principal dancer, choreographer, and artistic director Peter Martins. 'Rubies' In 1967, the great Russian-born choreographer, George Balanchine, created his world famous ballet Jewels for the New York City Ballet. The three act ballets all have a different composer and motif. Rubies, with music by Igor Stravinsky, is the second act of the ballet and truly captures the sexy energy and athleticism of our country. The ballet is packed with adventure, fun and playfulness, and the dazzling bejeweled costumes will take your breath away. 'Divertimento' from 'Le Baiser De La Fée' Divertimento from Le Baiser De La Fée (the Fairy’s Kiss) was created for the New York City Ballet for the 1972 Stravinsky Festival. The New York Times dance critic has described the ballet as one of George Balanchine’s greatest and most unusual works. The choreography is deeply poetic and has always moved audiences by its light and shade, creating an experience you will never forget. 'Ash' With accelerated tempi to the exciting music by Michael Torke, Peter Martins, former artistic director of New York City Ballet, launches 10 dancers on a non-stop series of thrilling solos, duets, and ensemble dances that leaves audiences amazed and thrilled.
