Join UC San Diego for our Intersections Concert Series at Park & Market in the Guggenheim Theatre hosted by UC San Diego and New York-based violinist Yale Strom, one of the world’s leading ethnographer-artists of klezmer and Romani music and history. Jeff Nevin Jeff Nevin studied conducting at the Pierre Monteux School with Charles Bruck and was conductor of the Southwestern College Symphony Orchestra from 2013-2021. While his professional work has leaned more towards performing as a mariachi musician, soloist and band leader, his experience in these areas combined with his training and expertise as a symphonic conductor gives him a unique perspective on the interpretation of Mexican symphonic music, including the works of Revueltas, Chavez, Moncayo, Galindo, Marquez and others. Mariachi Garibaldi From Southwestern College Performing ensemble from Southwestern College, the first school in the world to offer a college degree in mariachi music. Many former students have moved on to receive Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Music, perform mariachi professionally including with some of the top mariachis in the country, and they are beginning to fill the great need for mariachi instructors that exists across the US today. Mariachi Garibaldi has been featured in both American and Mexican national news broadcasts and several documentaries, they have performed across the US and Mexico, and recently performed in Brazil (2019 & 2014), Egypt (2018), Belgium (2017), Germany (2016), India (2015), Canada (2015), Russia (2012 & 2009), France (2012 & 2010) and China (2010). Events Listed Below: Men’s Pelvic Health and Wellness - June 1 (virtual) Learn about the pelvic floor for men, symptoms of pelvic floor dysfunction, how to address them and when to seek professional help. The pelvic floor is a combination of muscles, ligaments and connective tissues that support the pelvic organs. Learn about the anatomy, function and roles of the pelvic floor muscles as they relate to urinary control, bladder and bowel function, and sexual health and wellness. Nutrition and Fitness Beyond Cancer Treatment - June 6 (virtual) Learn about foods to include in your diet that decrease the risk of cancer recurrence or second primary cancers, improve energy levels and lower the risk of chronic diseases. Discover which foods have the greatest benefits and why, and how to incorporate them in a healthy lifestyle. Nutrition and Fitness During Cancer Treatment - June 20 (virtual) Learn about food flexibility for optimal nutrition prior to and during cancer treatment, as well as signs and symptoms related to treatment. Attendees will learn about optimal hydration and nutrition, including the importance of adequate protein and calories. Healthy Bones Exercise Class - Multiple dates and locations in June This exercise program includes exercises that target the body’s larger muscle groups to improve strength, balance and flexibility. Minimize bone loss and promote bone health by utilizing weights, bands and yoga postures. The program is designed to build stronger bones, improve balance and promote functional strength and fitness. This class takes place on the campus of Scripps Mercy Hospital San Diego at the Woltman Family College Building in Hillcrest. Exercise for Lymphedema - Multiple dates and locations in June Therapeutic exercises are known to help relieve swelling and pain caused by lymphedema. This weekly exercise class is led by experts from Scripps Shiley Fitness Center who teach proper exercise techniques to alleviate swelling and reduce discomfort. The 45-minute exercise class utilizes a combination of seated, standing and floor exercises. Modifications and variations will be offered to accommodate all levels of fitness and conditioning. Medical clearance and advanced notice are required to participate in the class.
