We welcome you and your family & friends to join us as we honor the rich traditions and share in the experience of Día de los Muertos on Sunday, November 2 from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. at the Dorothea Laub Building in the Arts District of Liberty Station located in Point Loma! Rooted in community, family, and remembrance, this event creates a heart-centered and safe space for all ages to honor their loved ones—both people and animals—who have passed. Through music, art, hands-on and interactive activities, we invite families to learn, create, and celebrate together. This is a non-scary, family-friendly gathering designed to foster cultural awareness, connection, and joy while celebrating the traditions of Día de los Muertos in our community. We’ll be decorating calavera (skull) cookies in the morning. Then, we’ll enjoy music making and festivities before a procession set to begin at 2 p.m. Join us as we walk together through the Dorothea Laub and Dance Place Buildings. We’ll enjoy the art, music making, and handmade shrines made by local community members and students! Festivities and open house will run until 5 p.m. Specific activities will be available only as long as supplies last. We hope to see you and your loved ones there! Kevin specializes in advanced propagation techniques such as plant tissue culture to conserve rare, endangered, and challenging-to-grow plants of Catalina. Kevin grew up in Corona del Mar before graduating from the University of Hawaii and the University of California Irvine. As he became older and stretched to see outside of his city limits either through conversation, books, music or traveling, he gained a different perspective on the importance of culture, art, wisdom and what it means to be “educated.” Don’t let his age fool you: Kahlil Childs is the leader of the Kahlil Childs Quartet and a member of the Rob Thorsen Quartet, which features some of the finest professional musicians in San Diego. He specializes in alto sax and also plays soprano, tenor, and baritone saxophones, as well as bass clarinet and flute. He currently studies with Detroit legend and Grammy Award–winning musician/producer Kamau Kenyatta, and has also studied with renowned saxophonist Charles McPherson. "M(other) Tongues" brings together artists who use textile to examine the interconnected experiences of migration, displacement, and cultural inheritance. Drawing on textile traditions rooted in women’s domestic and communal practices, the works approach stitching, weaving, and dyeing as forms of mark making—methods of carrying ancestral stories across borders and generations. In "M(other) Tongues," cloth becomes both archive and language, expressing the tensions of uprooting and the desire to remain connected to one’s past.
