Following June 8th’s Sorrento Fire, which burned over 90 acres, the Del Mar Heights, Carmel Valley, Del Mar Mesa, Sorrento Valley, and Torrey Hills Fire Safe Councils will host a Fire Safety Workshop on June 27, 2026 from 4-6:30 p.m. at the Del Mar Heights School Multi-Use Room, located at 13555 Boquita Drive. The workshop will feature presentations (4-5:30 p.m.) from fire safety professionals on preventative measures residents can take to reduce wildfire risk during fire season, as well as an open Q&A panel allowing community members to pose questions directly to experts. Fire-safe vendors will hold an expo (5:30-6:30 p.m.) to discuss home hardening solutions and materials, with pizza provided by Del Mar Pizza. Speakers from the Red Cross will discuss home-hardening techniques. Rex Hambly from the San Diego Fire Department will share information about fire preparedness and the Sorrento Fire. The San Diego Police Department will touch on topics such as evacuation planning and procedures, in addition to emergency notification systems. Upcycling Fun! Thursday, August 13, from 6-8:30 p.m. Give new life to your wardrobe in this creative, beginner-friendly 2.5 hour workshop! Led by local-artist and printmaker Kasey Leung, you’ll learn how to design, carve, and hand-print your own original block, then use it to transform a piece of clothing you already own. Bring a garment like a denim jacket, linen pants, cotton shirt, or canvas tote, and learn how to thoughtfully place your print to create a one-of-a-kind wearable piece. Feel free to come with ideas, inspiration, or printed reference images, keeping in mind that your design will need to fit within a 4×6 inch block. The best fabrics for block printing are natural fibers with smooth, tight weaves, such as cotton or linen. It’s best to avoid stretchy, heavily textured, or fuzzy fabrics like knit or wool. No experience needed and all printing materials are provided. Just bring a few cotton or linen-based items, and we can work together to select the best one to print on! This workshop is all about personal expression, experimentation, and embracing the beauty of handmade imperfections. You’ll leave with a refreshed, uniquely yours piece of clothing and your carved block to keep creating at home. Come and explore the gorgeous natural blue of indigo in this hands-on natural dye workshop! Students will learn a range of shibori dye resist processes in this hands-on, creative workshop, including tegumo (spiderweb), ori nui (stitched), and itajime (clamped) shibori methods. We will be using a natural indigo vat to dye a bamboo scarf and better understand the process and symbiotic relationship with indigo dye and this traditional textile surface design. Students will acquire the basic techniques to continue their journey into creating beautiful, unique textiles. This class is appropriate for ages 14+ years old. No prior experience necessary. Learn the Art of Intarsia Woodworking! Sunday, August 9, from 9 a.m. - 2 p.m. Join us in the woodshop for this 5-hour intarsia woodworking workshop! Intarsia is a woodworking technique that involves the use of varied shapes of wood to create an image or pattern. In this class, we will cover shop safety and how to use a scroll saw, as well as best practices for sanding and finishing. Students will choose from a template to transfer to their wood, creating a mosaic-like decorative wall piece. Template options will be provided, and may be altered and edited based on skill level. At the end of the workshop, each student will leave with their own intarsia project. Materials are provided. We recommend students bring their own eye protection, ear protection & apron, but we have some for borrow if needed. Aprons for sale here. No experience necessary. Ages 18+ welcome. Join us in the woodshop for this 3-hour scroll saw skills woodworking workshop! In this scroll saw for beginners class, students will learn the basics of getting started in the hobby. A list of the tools and supplies needed will be provided, along with a description of the blade types and samples of items that can be made with them. Students will also cover a brief overview of cutting techniques, and tips for success at home. We will then go through four hands-on exercises, to help build your skill set and become comfortable using a scroll saw. You will practice cutting curves, sharp turns and straight lines. Afterwards we progress through the steps and learn new techniques alongthe way. You will leave with the items you make throughout the day. Pictured is the final exercise which uses all of the previous skills practiced earlier to complete it. Materials are provided. Beginners welcome! Join us for this 3-hour workshop, as you learn to handcraft your own unique kumihimo bracelet. Kumihimo is a traditional Japanese artform and craftwork for making braids and cords. In the past, kumihimo decorations were used as accessories for kimono as well as samurai armor. Literally meaning gathered threads, kumihimo are made by interlacing reels of yarn, commonly silk, with the use of traditional, specialized looms. With the advent of an inexpensive handheld loom, you can make bracelets and necklaces affordably and easily.
