Learn to Carve a Scandinavian Eater or Serving Spoon! Sunday, June 28, from 9 a.m. - 2 p.m. In this intermediate spoon carving workshop, Woodworker Paul Maschka guides students as they grow their carving skills. This class is for students who have taken Beginner Spoon Carving with Paul or have done some prior intricate wood carving with carving knives. Students will learn and use specific Scandinavian style tools to create beautiful yet functional spoons for eating or serving food. Students will learn to carve from a green log of wood to a finished, elegant spoon, while also learning safe tool practices, proper body mechanics, and how to sharpen your carving tools. All tools and supplies will be provided for this course. Prerequisite: This class is designed for the intermediate carver. Students should have either taken Beginner Spoon Carving with Paul, or have previous experience with intricate wood carving, before enrolling in this workshop. All of the necessary tools and materials will be available to students for this class. Tools and chopping blocks will be available for purchase after the class. No experience necessary. Learn to needle felt! Saturday, June 27, 9 a.m. - 12 p.m. Ages 12+years welcome! A flash of emerald, a blur of wings — the hummingbird is nature’s tiny miracle! In this 3-hour workshop, we will work together to capture that fleeting magic in wool. Using natural roving and needle felting techniques, you’ll build up layers of colored wool to bring your hummingbird to life, and ready to hang — all jewel-toned and hovering wings…all it takes is patience, a little wonder, and a lot of wool. No two birds will be the same! Felting needle safety will be included for use, with finger guards provided. Explore color & weave effect with Log Cabin pattern! Saturday, August 22, from 1-6 p.m. In this 5-hour hands-on workshop, weavers who’ve explored the direct warping (rigid heddle) technique will learn to warp to create a multi-color textile, creating the classic pattern of log cabin. This pattern creates a 3D-effect using alternating colors in warp and weft, making it a great next step for weavers of all skill levels. In class, students will first learn best practices for warping their looms with multiple colors. You may borrow a rigid heddle loom to warp on or bring your own (please leave a note in the comments on which loom you will bring to warp if bringing your own). The remainder of the class will cover learning to weave with more than one color as weft and how to manage and create clean and balanced selvedges. Each student will create their own finished 10-20″ long log cabin textile to take home. Prerequisite: Students must have taken Warp & Weave on a Rigid Heddle Loom or be comfortable warping a rigid heddle loom using the direct warping method. All materials to warp and weave a log cabin textile are included for use. If you’re interested in learning to warp and weave on your own rigid heddle loom, please email Instructor Jeanine Ertl with what type of loom you have in advance.
